Are you interested in providing the day-to-day operations of the heritage farm area at Fort William Historical Park (FWHP)? Do you want to provide skilled expertise in farming operations to showcase historical methods? If so, then join Fort William Historical Park where you will research, develop and maintain a heritage kitchen garden to enhance the interpretive program and recommend and implement new and innovative farming programs.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Fort William Historical Park is a living history tourism attraction providing top-level cultural heritage, entertainment and educational experiences for residents and visitors to northwestern Ontario, in this role, you will:

• Develop, implement and coordinate the year round interpretation of a living history program for the entertainment and education of a wide range of clients
• Ensure historical accuracy in the depiction and portrayal of all farm programs
• Participate in historical dramatizations, pageants, festivals, special events, daily activities, education and out-reach programs
• Provide technical direction and training to the Farmer and seasonal staff
• Schedule activities and review quality of work performed
• Ensure that all work is performed in accordance with safety regulations, to maintain a safe environment for both staff and the public
• Responsible for coordinating a 24-hr, 7 day/week working heritage farm operation which includes draught horses, cattle, pigs, sheep, and chickens
• Drive a two horse team of draught horses, in a public setting, both in daylight and night time conditions
• Deal with equipment/machinery malfunction by demonstrating correct operation or identifying the need for replaced or repaired equipment/machinery
• Serve as the lead farm resource to all operational areas, in matters pertaining to farming and livestock
• Recommend and implement new and innovative farming programs at FWHP
• Oversee budget administration, expenditures, and the maintenance and inventory of farm equipment, material and supplies
• Prepare statistical reports, correspondence and program outlines

Note: Fort William Historical Park is a 7-day a week, 24-hour operation. Position may be required to attend overnight functions, travel to out of town events and off-hour programs, work holidays and weekends.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You must possess a Class G Ontario Driver's Licence

Business Knowledge:

• You have knowledge of Fort William Historical Park programs and events to lead and coordinate the day to day operations of the heritage farm
• You have knowledge of farming and gardening skills for a mixed vegetable garden
• You have general animal husbandry skills and the ability to operate heavy agricultural equipment/machinery and power tools
• You have effective horsemanship skills to drive two horse teams of heavy draught horses in a public setting, both in daylight and night time conditions

Technical Skills:

• You have knowledge of interpretive applications, special events, theoretical and applied living history techniques for the development of event, education, and interpretive planning
• You have interpretive skills to develop an historical persona and interpret (both orally and by demonstration) the daily activities of the early 1800s at Fort William
• You have the ability to document historical characters and events, and present educational workshops to staff and public
• You know health and safety procedures, policies pertaining to a mixed farm operation employing hand and power tools, and heavy equipment
• You are able to effectively and safely operate hand and power tools, and heavy equipment

Leadership and Coordination Skills:

• You have group leadership skills to direct and coordinate the activities of staff
• You have excellent organizational skills to plan and coordinate work within a team
• You can organize and prioritize workload to ensure deadlines are met and farm duties performed to schedule

Analytical and Problem Solving Skills:

• You have effective analytical skills to advance the development of new and innovative heritage farm programming for all ages
• You have strong evaluative skills to research and develop a heritage kitchen garden to enhance the interpretive program
• You have excellent reasoning skills to drive a two horse team of draught horses and deal with potential safety issues as they arise
• You are able to resolve problems referred by staff, e.g., instruct staff in the correct and safe operation of farm tools, equipment and machinery

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

• You have excellent oral communication, interpersonal and teaching skills
• You are able to represent the farm program to staff, visitors, suppliers and partners of FWHP
• You are able to participate in historical dramatization and interpretive demonstrations
