Field Technician Biomonitoring

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role you will :
• Provide seasonal support to assist in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data on trace contaminants in various media including fish,
sediment water and biota.
• Contribute to the preparation of technical reports, scientific papers and other documents, on the subject of contaminants in the aquatic environment.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

You have an Ontario class G driver's license

Knowledge of Aquatic and Environmental Sciences

• You have knowledge of aquatic biology and aquatic chemistry, technical/specialized water sampling methodologies and application/use of related equipment
• You have knowledge of fish collection equipment, limnological sampling equipment and data collection procedures; and methodological and hydrologic equipment and data collection procedures
• You have knowledge of Ministry laboratory sample submission procedures and Ministry technical reporting requirements
• You have knowledge of Ministry's water management policies and relevant legislation (e.g. Environmental Protection Act, Ontario Water Resources Act) to assess water quality when conducting water sampling monitoring and research projects and evaluate contaminants in the aquatic system
• You have knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g. Occupational Health and Safety Act) and safe operating procedures and work practices to ensure that the personnel assisting in sampling projects work in accordance with applicable safe work practices, particularly when working in remote areas or on lakes using specialized equipment such as motorboats

Software and Database Management Knowledge

• You know software programs for database management to edit and manipulate large amounts of data and conduct analyses of large data sets
• You have experience using computers and associated software applications, such as word processing, spreadsheet, graphical and statistical, to summarize and describe data
• You have the skills required to access and query databases, prepare charts and tables, prepare reports and to communicate using e-mail and the Internet

Reasoning and Problem-Solving Skills

• You can consolidate and lead analysis of data, using data modelling techniques
• You can develop recommendations on sources and causes of impairment, remedial and preventive action and on any follow-up required
• You can measure the effectiveness of controls or remedial actions

Communication Skills

• You can communicate in a clear manner to present detailed technical and scientific information and reports, conduct interviews and make presentations to both scientific experts and non-experts
• You can prepare a variety of technical documents and reports for a range of audiences, including reports on scientific findings with related statistical information and recommendations for controls
