Bring your knowledge and skills in food preparation and safety to the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, Toronto South Detention Centre, where you will assist with large volume food production for the institution.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

• Assist in the production and service of cold and hot regular and diet trays
• Ensure food services equipment and supplies are used and stored in a safe and efficient manner
• Ensure cleanliness, safety and security are maintained at all times
• Assist in training staff and supervising inmate helpers

Please note:

• This position supervises inmate helpers. Salary note for Custodial Responsibility Allowance (K-1) applies

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You have a valid Food Handlers or In Good Hands certification prior to commencement of employment
• You have current First Aid and Heartsaver certificates or the ability to obtain them upon employment

Specialized Knowledge and Skills

• You have knowledge of cook-chill/retherm safety principles, and standard cooking, food preparation and storage methods and procedures
• You have knowledge in food safety practices, and the proper use of kitchen equipment and tools
• You can interpret and apply relevant legislation (i.e., Public Health Act, Health Protection and Promotion Act, Sanitation Code for Canada's Food Industry, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)

Communication Skills

• You can communicate effectively, and use tact and diplomacy when working with ministry staff, inmate helpers and service providers
• You can prepare a variety of reports

Team Leadership Skills

• You can provide instruction and direction to inmate helpers

Analytical and Problem Solving Skills

• You can identify and assess workplace hazards, equipment malfunctions and food services issues
