Are you interested in supervising the planning, organization and completion of assessment reports and service/treatment plans by line correctional staff in a living unit? Do you want to provide guidance/instruction in assessment and helping skills? If so, join the Ministry of Community, Safety and Correctional Services where you will provide input on philosophy and methods to unit management to promote the development of a therapeutic milieu and a strong unit team.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:
• Review clinical information available on residents
• Consult with the unit managers about the general management of residents and the supervision of case managers
• Guide case managers in orienting residents to the unit structure and treatment expectations
• Coordinate the formulation of overall assessment reports/recommendations and service plans, chairing assessment committees and case conference/planning meetings
• Provide coaching, support and advice to case managers in applying psychosocial concepts to case and group situations
• Conduct staff training and developmental sessions with correctional staff
• Review and revise reports received from case managers, sharing confidential and specialized service reports as appropriate
• Provide assessment, treatment and referral services to selected residents
• Complete internal and external classification of residents and oversee related administrative tasks
• Assess the appropriateness of residents for referral to specialized treatment services
• Offer individual, marital, family and group services as required
• Facilitate RNR Treatment Groups
• Offer crisis intervention as needed
• Provide specialized and/or clinical follow-up discharge planning services
• Act as a referral agent and coordinate discharge plans for residents
• Represent the Department of Social Work on institutional committees
• Supervise social work students
• Perform public relations tasks and complete public speaking engagements.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You must be registered as a social worker in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers & Social Service Workers

Business Knowledge:

• You have knowledge of principles, theories and practices of professional social work to provide direction/supervision to Case Managers and other correctional staff
• You are able to provide consultation to health care professionals and community agencies, and to develop and monitor specialized programs for specific offender groups
• You have knowledge of psycho-social clinical assessment and therapeutic principles and techniques to provide clinical services to offenders, information, interpretation and advice to institution staff

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

• You have an understanding of institutional policies/programs/procedures and relevant legislation (e.g. Correctional Services Act)
• You are able to assess social work programs and provide consultation, explanations and advice to professionals, staff, offenders, community organizations, and the public
• You have knowledge of community resources/services and organizations to co-ordinate services for offenders and formulate discharge plans in collaboration with the Discharge Planner
• You are a seasoned facilitator and practiced presenter
• You are able to deliver structured treatment programming including delivering and maintaining progress reports and assessments

Analytical, Evaluative and Problem-Solving Skills:

• You have excellent analytical skills to evaluate program effectiveness and determine improvements taking into consideration a number of factors
• You are able to develop specialized programs for specific offender groups, (e.g., chronically mentally ill, chemically dependent, which require rehabilitative treatment plans customized to their conditions)
• You have effective problem-solving skills to assess offenders' psycho-social functioning using multiple information sources, and to also formulate treatment plans
• You have excellent reasoning skills when providing consultation to other professionals in the multidisciplinary team and the community regarding treatment needs and discharge planning

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

• You have excellent oral communication skills to participate in multidisciplinary team discussions on diagnoses and treatment plans
• You can deliver educational lectures and presentations to institutional staff
• You have excellent written communication skills to write assessment reports and program evaluations, correspondence and case summaries
• You are able to demonstrate tact and sensitivity when dealing with offenders to discuss problems/treatment plans and when acting as clinical lead to subordinate staff
• You have knowledge of motivational counseling skills when counseling individuals and groups
• You are able to establish and maintain professional relationships with staff and residents
• You can provide supervision, instruction and input into the appraisal of correctional officers in relation to case management duties

Computer Skills:

• You have knowledge of word processing software packages to input/retrieve offender data, prepare reports and maintain case documentation and statistics
