Are you an experienced food service professional? Do you enjoy interacting and being a positive influence on youth? If so, consider this opportunity with the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, Sprucedale Youth Centre.

Sprucedale Youth Centre is a Direct-Operated Secure Custody and Detention facility for youths. Sprucedale Youth Centre is located in Southwestern Ontario, in the Town of Simcoe (located approximately 60 km West of Hamilton).

Please Note: The temporary position is irregular, on-call and the hours of work vary from 0-40 hours per week, and are not guaranteed.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In a large-volume facility kitchen, you will:
• Participate in all areas of meal preparation, safety, security and food inventory/rotation
• Maintain housekeeping and sanitary work conditions
• Inspect eating facilities and equipment to ensure standards are maintained
• Follow prescribed menus, work schedules and dietary charts, and substituting menu changes
• Serve and portion meals
• Train and supervise youth helpers

How do I qualify?

Volume Cooking Knowledge and Skills

• You have volume cooking knowledge and experience and can produce meals adhering to proper food preparation techniques
• You can use food supplies to accommodate various meal requirements such as special diets
• You have experience ensuring sanitary work conditions and maintaining kitchen equipment
• You can acquire knowledge of and comply with Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) protocols

Communication (Oral and Written) and Interpersonal Skills

• You can work effectively within a team environment
• You can supervise and train resident helpers in a professional manner
• You can prepare written reports on services provided

Other Essential Skills

• You have demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
• You are able to maintain a safe and secure working environment, including reminding resident helpers of security regulations and precautions
