What can I expect to do in this role?

Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Superintendent, School of Horticulture and within established policies and procedures, contributes to the efficient operation of the Botanical Gardens and School of Horticulture. Participates in applied practical teaching and safety programs. Teaches and evaluates NPC staff and students on safe operation and has final sign off authority for all trainees. Teaches and evaluates full-time students in academic and applied courses and continues to assist in the development of the curriculum and policy for the school. Teaches an NPC approved equipment operation training program. In conjunction with the Assistant Superintendent, School of Horticulture, aides in development of course content and delivers curriculum for several courses and workshops. Acquires and maintains motorized and manual equipment/tools.

How do I qualify?

The qualified candidate should possess:

• Completion of a Diploma or equivalent Certificates of one or more related Construction Trade apprenticeship (e.g. carpentry, masonry).
• Certificates in related Horticulture trades such as, small equipment maintenance, etc.
• Must hold a valid Class “G” Driver's License.
• Must have certification as an equipment trainer having specifically a thorough knowledge of landscaping machinery and equipment.
• Four years of demonstrated experiences in landscape construction; including management and instruction.
• Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of students.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to deal with the public using tact and courtesy.
• Record keeping skills.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position and strong mechanical aptitude and experience.
• Ability to demonstrate and to evaluate the work activities of students.
• Knowledge and experience with an extensive range of horticultural equipment, tools, tractors, mowers and associated implements.
• Extensive knowledge of industrial and horticultural safety practices and the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations
