We are currently recruiting for 8 Police Training Instructors in the following teaching areas:

• Use of Force Instructor (x3) with a focus in either: Defensive Tactics, Firearms, or Officer Safety;
• Forensic Identification (x3) with a focus in either: Bloodstain Pattern Analyst (certified), Tire and Footwear Impression Comparison, Shooting Scene Examination, Fingerprint Comparison, or Recovery of Human Remains;
• Leadership (x1) with a focus on Human Resource investigations, senior leadership challenges;

What can I expect to do in this role?

As an experienced trainer and expert in Police Training, you will:
• Deliver and facilitate learning in assigned police and law enforcement related subject areas
• Provide subject matter expertise to learners, trainers, judicial hearings, and police services
• Design course training standards and organize, coordinate, and evaluate police courses and training events
• Research subject area, prepare lesson plans and other resource material, and design tests and examinations

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• Minimum valid driver's license class of G or equivalent as recognized by the Province of Ontario
• Some travel within Ontario is required

Adult Education

• You have knowledge and experience with adult education theories and methodologies in order to provide/facilitate training to police services and other enforcement agencies
• You know curriculum design, development, and implementation techniques
• You are proficient with common computer applications and the internet to prepare lesson plans, reports, presentations, graphics, etc.
• You can operate classroom presentation technology

Law Enforcement Knowledge

• You have knowledge and experience with criminal and/or provincial offences investigations best practices, procedures, and standards
• You understand multi-jurisdictional criminal investigations (such as homicide or serial criminal offences)
• You can supervise uniform patrol and criminal investigations
• You have knowledge of existing, new, and changing federal/provincial legislation and case law decisions related to police services and law enforcement
• You are aware of advancements in technology and practices that affect policing services

Subject Matter Expertise

You have extensive knowledge and experience in one or more of the following specialized teaching areas:

Use of Force Instructor (with a focus on Defensive Tactics): A person with this specialty will coordinate and instruct on the Defensive Tactics program within the Basic Constable Course as well as instructing on various other courses such as Use of Force Trainer. The successful candidate should have significant experience within a law enforcement agency, be able to demonstrate the ability to design, develop and deliver courses to the target audience.

Use of Force Instructor (with a focus on Firearms): A person with this specialty will coordinate and instruct on the Firearms program within the Basic Constable Course as well as instructing on various other courses such as Use of Force Trainer. The successful candidate should have significant experience within a law enforcement agency, be able to demonstrate the ability to design, develop and deliver courses to the target audience.

Use of Force Instructor (with a focus on Officer Safety):A person with this specialty will coordinate and instruct on the Officer Safety program within the Basic Constable Course as well as instructing on various other courses such as Use of Force Trainer and senior course modules on mental health for first responders and for people in crisis. The successful candidate should have significant experience within a law enforcement agency, be able to demonstrate the ability to design, develop and deliver courses to the target audience.

Forensic Identification (with a focus on Bloodstain Pattern Analyst - certified): A person with this specialty will coordinate and instruct on the Forensic Identification program as well as being responsible for the Bloodstain Pattern Analyst Certification Program. Assist with forensic identification instruction on senior courses and the Basic Constable Training courses as well as co-instructing on other forensic identification courses. The successful candidate should have significant experience within a law enforcement agency and must have a certification as a Bloodstain Pattern Analyst. Preference will be given to candidates who have been qualified as experts in this area.

Forensic Identification (with a focus on Tire and Footwear Impression Comparison):A person with this specialty will instruct on the Forensic Identification program. Assist with forensic identification instruction on senior courses and the Basic Constable Training courses as well as co-instructing on other forensic identification courses. Preference will be given to court qualified experts. The successful candidate should have significant experience within a law enforcement agency and have experience in either tire/footwear impression comparison, fingerprint comparison, and/or recovery of human remains.

Forensic Identification (with a focus on Shooting Scene Examination):A person with this specialty will instruct on the Forensic Identification Officer course as well as being responsible for the Shooting Scene Examination course. Assist with forensic identification instruction on senior courses and the Basic Constable Training courses as well as co-instructing on other forensic identification courses. Preference will be given to court qualified experts.

Forensic Identification (with a focus on Fingerprint Comparison):A person with this specialty will instruct on the Forensic Identification Officer course as well as being responsible for the Friction Ridge Analysis course and the Advanced Friction Ridge Analysis course. Assist with forensic identification instruction on senior courses and the Basic Constable Training courses as well as co-instructing on other forensic identification courses. Preference will be given to court qualified experts.

Forensic Identification (with a focus on Recovery of Human Remains): A person with this specialty will instruct on the Forensic Identification Officer course as well as being responsible for the Recovery of Human Remains course. Assist with forensic identification instruction on senior courses and the Basic Constable Training courses as well as co-instructing on other forensic identification courses. Preference will be given to court qualified experts.

Leadership: A person with this specialty will demonstrate a broad understanding of leadership theories and apply those to operational examples. This individual will act as a coach and mentor to both the Ontario Police College as well as our external stakeholders in the area of leadership. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate skills derived from leadership positions during their tenure as a senior leader or commissioned officer of a law enforcement agency. This would also include (but not limited to) experiences drawn from Human Resource incidents and management, budgetary oversight and exposure to a wide range of organizational scopes of responsibility.

*NEW* Criminal Investigations: A person with this specialty will demonstrate a broad understanding of the fundamentals of criminal investigation and theories and apply those to operational examples. This individual will have extensive experience in interviewing of suspects, specialized posting experience related to gang intervention, synthetic drug investigation and/or crimes against persons. The successful candidate should have a significant experience within a law enforcement agency, be able to demonstrate the ability to design, develop and deliver courses to the target audience.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• You have presentation skills to present and explain highly complex information clearly and accurately for learners
• You have written communication skills to prepare course materials and other reports
• You can provide expert testimony at judicial hearings and coroners inquests and undergo cross examination regarding teaching methodologies and legal interpretations used in the design of training content
• You have team work skills to work effectively in a high performance team, including serving on committees
• You can negotiate and promote acceptance of new approaches as well as manage discipline issues

Analytical, Reasoning, and Problem-Solving Skills

• You can conduct research and analyze legal or policing issues
• You are able to identify training needs and provide solutions
• You can evaluate training program effectiveness as well as anticipate and respond to changes in the field
