What we are looking for:

As the Law Clerk, you will:
• Co-ordinate the execution of various legal documents from inception to completion such as drafting/analyzing requests and amendments submitted by internal Agency clients, scrutinizing legal documents ensuring accuracy in accordance with legal precedent.
• Prepare legal documentation and/or the summaries on proposed regulation and legislation amendments for use in the Legal Services Group.
• Initiate various legal processes culminating in finalization and execution of legal agreements/contracts prepared for senior management.
• Conduct legal research and analysis of existing legislation and precedent legal matters, interpreting restrictions, advising Counsel on general legal positions to be taken by the Agency to ensure protection of the Agency's legal interests, identify implications of legal issues and clarifying or bringing ambiguous provisions to Counsel's attention.
• Assist the Executive Vice President & General Counsel with preparing materials and presentations for the Board as well as Board governance matters.
• Review evidence, records and other documents for suitability and conduct inquiries to determine the degree of liability against the Agency.

Knowledge:

• Knowledge of legal office methods, procedures and related policies and relevant federal and provincial statutes to provide administrative and research services to Counsel (e.g. gathering/assessing evidence, reviewing legal articles, statutes and references) and identify implications of legal issues
• Knowledge of various research facilities and procedures (e.g. corporate searches, bankruptcy, execution searches, land registry searches) for the execution of legal agreements/contracts
• Knowledge of legal principles and procedures, search vehicles, legal formats, style, terminology and phraseology to identify legal issues through analysis of facts and prepare legal documents
• Knowledge of computer operation and various word processing software (e.g. Word, Windows) to manipulate text to produce letters and legal documents according to established procedures

Skills and Abilities

• Analytical skills to select appropriate legal terminology/phraseology, style and format when preparing legal documents from precedents or information contained in files
• Research and analytical skills to determine, prepare information pertinent to legal issues by researching files and case law for references, citations and statutes to be inserted in legal documents
• Analytical skill to review evidence and other legal documents, identify legal issues and determine degree of liability against the Agency
• Oral and written communication and customer service skills to consult with OCWA management/staff provide legal administrative support
