We hosts up to a million visitors each year, and offers hands-on experiences and insights into science and technology that help visitors of all ages understand and contribute to the world around us.

The Ontario Science Centre has a large fabrication unit where exhibit fabricators assist in design and development of exhibits that we then fabricate and sell to museums around the world.

What can I expect to do in this role?

As an Exhibit fabricator:
• You will support a team in planning and building science exhibits
• You will set up /take down Ontario Science Centre and third party designed exhibits
• You may be asked to work on our international shows, which could involve travel abroad.
• You will work cooperatively alongside other departments and various other trades
• You will do interesting and creative work that will help to inspire our next generation of learners

How do I qualify?

Technical Knowledge & Experience

• Extensive knowledge of woodworking principles, generally accepted trade practices, techniques and methods.
• Demonstrated woodwork experience in areas such as, the fabrication of exhibits, trade shows and other related construction.
• Ability to read blueprints and design sketches, develop woodworker calculations, as well as produce costings and estimates for builds.
• Experience working with a wide range of portable and hand woodworking tools, machinery joints, fasteners, finishing and trim.
• General knowledge of associated trades (e.g. metal, electrical, electronics, graphic production), in order to identify construction issues and provide resolutions.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• Excellent communication skills to work collaboratively with team members, designers, the metal and electronics/electric shops, as well as other staff involved in exhibit development and specific projects.
• Strong oral communication skills to effectively explain technical issues relating to construction problems, production techniques and material properties, providing sound recommendations to designers and manager.
• Interpersonal skills to occasionally liaise with suppliers and tactfully respond to clients and other staff.

Health and Safety

• Knowledge and experience of the safe operation, preventative maintenance and usage of woodworking machines, air powered/hand tools (e.g. hydraulic press, band saws, etc.), and finishes.
• Knowledge of tool and shop maintenance, best practices for safe wood working procedures and safe working environment.
