The Ontario Science Centre is seeking a Science Writer/Editor to ensure the quality and consistency of editorial content for our visitors.

What can I expect to do in this role?

The Science Writer/Editor develops communications for visitor-based experiences, which includes but is not limited to, writing and editing text and scripts for Ontario Science Centre (OSC) exhibits, multi-media communications, and publications. Some of the position responsibilities include:
• Producing all written science communications for visitor-based experiences
• Translating scientific and technological information/concepts into simplified language for the general public while maintaining a clear and consistent editorial style/voice across all exhibits;
• Writing/editing instructional and explanatory copy, audio-visual scripts for exhibits, multimedia/digital communications, publications and the OSC's website;
• Working within multi-disciplinary teams to determine requirements for exhibit copy and coordinating development of all OSC exhibit copy;
• Planning and coordinating delivery of writing and editing services as required

How do I qualify?

Written and Oral Communication Skills

•Written communication skills to write, edit and proofread a wide variety of communication materials, including exhibit text, brochures, web pages, annual reports, marketing and Government documents.
•Knowledge of communication theory, techniques, methods and practices, research techniques, writing techniques and styles
•Ability to assess writing style and tone and advise on how to communicate written message in relation to nature of objectives and audience
•Oral and interpersonal communication skills to conduct interviews and gather information

Analytical and Research Skills

•Analytical and evaluative skills to research, and assess issues/initiatives and prepare communication materials
•Ability to assess nature of research required, identify sources and gather/compile information from researchers, scientists, university students and staff

Science Knowledge

•Ability to understand and present scientific information, develop and discuss views in a way that the general public can understand.
•Knowledge of science/education topics and ability to translate scientific and technological information into clear, interesting, understandable and enjoyable copy for the general public

Knowledge of Print Media

•Position requires knowledge of design and print production processes and project management skills to contract with and supervise freelance personnel and service suppliers
•Experience with writing for websites and audiovisual/digital presentations

Computer Skills

•Knowledge of word processing, desktop publishing and communication software to produce print materials and to create material for digital and online offerings
•Knowledge to maintain a terminology database to ensure consistency across various documents
