Fort William Historical Park is one of the largest living history attractions in North America. The park provides cultural, heritage, entertainment and educational experiences for residents and visitors to Northwestern Ontario.
We have a unique opportunity for a creative individual to assist with the coordination and delivery of native heritage programs, including the interpretation of Ojibwa lifestyle and culture in the early 1800s.
What can I expect to do in this role?
In this role, you will:
• Provide assistance in the research, development, training and implementation of Aboriginal heritage programs and activities;
• Monitor and evaluate historical interpretations, dramas, tours, special events, education and outreach programs;
• Portray a role in historic costume and participate in historical dramatizations, festivals and artisan demonstrations;
• Conduct research to ensure accuracy in the depiction of programs;
• Provide technical direction to students, and provide information to staff, stakeholders and community interest groups.
Please Note: This position may require you to attend overnight functions, travel to out of town events and off-hour programs, and work on holidays and weekends.
How do I qualify?
Mandatory
• You must possess a Valid class G driver's licence
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
• You have knowledge of theoretical and applied living history interpretive, drama and education methodologies and applications
• You have knowledge of Ojibwa culture and history, particularly as it applies to the historic fur trade era
• You have knowledge of fur trade natural history, period hunting, fishing and trapping techniques, as well as fabrication, construction, and esthetic techniques pertaining to relevant Aboriginal material culture
• You have proven skills in historical interpretation and heritage programming
• You can provide advice on Aboriginal cultural program development, and participate in historical dramatizations
Communication, Public Speaking and Interpersonal Skills:
• You can effectively conduct demonstrations, educate others and interact with visitors
• You have strong writing skills to accurately document program content and convey key program information
Group Leadership and Team Work Skills:
• You can coordinate day-to-day activities of students, and respond to customer service related issues
• You can work effectively in a team environment
Analytical, Problem Solving and Research Skills:
• You can conduct research to ensure accuracy in the depiction of programs
• You can develop Aboriginal cultural programs specific to audience needs
