What can I expect to do in this role?

Keeping Ontario's Legislative Assembly running smoothly takes many talented people, doing many different jobs—from camera operators and committee clerks, to purchasing officers and researchers. The Office of the Assembly is dedicated to serving Ontario's Parliament.

Together, we provide non-partisan administrative and procedural services to all MPPs, as well as operational support for the daily activities of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Research Officer (One Year Contract)

The Legislative Assembly of Ontario, located in Toronto, seeks a Research Officer with a background in public/government finance; additional expertise in energy policy is preferred. You will join the Legislative Library and Research Services Branch and its multi-disciplinary team of public policy analysts and information professionals. The team provides confidential, non-partisan information, research, and analysis to MPPs from all parties, legislative committees, and senior staff of the Assembly.

What You'll Do
You'll act with integrity to:
• Provide subject specialist research support, primarily in the area of public/government finance, and generalist support in a broad range of other public policy areas to our clients, particularly energy policy.
• Research and analyze complex public policy issues thoroughly and quickly, prepare concise, well-written reports, and deliver oral briefings on a broad range of topics in a deadline-driven environment
• Demonstrate sound judgement, tact, discretion, and sensitivity to the political environment, often under situations of considerable pressure

You'll support our collaboration as you:
• Are a highly motivated self-starter with excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently or in a team with other subject specialist researchers and librarians, and the flexibility and other skills needed to serve a client group with frequently changing priorities and deadlines

How do I qualify?

You demonstrate excellence through your:

• Completion of a master's degree in public administration or policy, political science, business, economics, or a related field
• Expert knowledge of issues related to public finance such as the budgetary and estimates processes and other aspects of the fiscal cycle, ability to analyze the public accounts and the financial statements of government agencies, and familiarity with related issues such as public-private partnerships and debt and deficit management
• Minimum two years of relevant research and policy analysis experience including the use of qualitative and quantitative analytical approaches plus data visualization skills reflected in the effective use of graphs, charts, and spreadsheets
• Superior research and analytical abilities combined with excellent written and oral communication skills
• Experience reading and interpreting public Acts
• Knowledge of Ontario and Canadian politics and legislative and governmental structures and processes
• Proficiency in French (would be an asset)
