The Sprucedale Youth Centre is seeking an experience Electrician to provide skilled electrical maintenance, repair, and installation services for a variety of security and industrial electrical systems within a secure detention youth centre.

What can I expect to do in this role?

• Work with Supervisor to discuss project needs, priorities, and recommend appropriate procedures/methods
• Check all aspects of facility electrical systems on a continuous basis, reporting issues/needs to Supervisor
• Maintain the refrigeration units by performing necessary electrical and mechanical repairs
• Maintain the stand-by diesel generating equipment used in emergencies
• Repair and maintain facility's telephone system
• Replace faulty equipment or wiring, motors, switches, appliance points, as necessary
• Prepare drawings and specifications for installation
• Supervise youth resident helpers as assigned
• Maintain a record of work carried out, materials used, etc.
• Assist other maintenance staff in the carrying out of major maintenance repairs
• Other duties as assigned

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You are a certified Electrician, licensed to practice within the province of Ontario

Specialized Knowledge and Experience

• You have extensive experience within the electrical trade including use of tools/equipment as well as knowledge of best practices and work methods
• You have experience providing electrical services within a commercial or industrial setting
• You are able to work from plans and/or drawings to ensure the proper layout of installations, wiring, switches, etc.
• You have experience performing preventative maintenance.
• You have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and WHMIS as well as relevant by-laws and codes in order to ensure the safety of installations
• You are able to comply with organizational policies and protocols to ensure the safety and security of staff and work environment

Note: This position requires working with and providing direction to youth resident helpers (and will be eligible for an Custodial Responsibility Allowance)

Problem-Solving and Troubleshooting Skills

• You can assess when all electrical installations should be replaced as well as estimate labour time and material requirements to install and replace electrical equipment
• You are able to determine the appropriate tools and method needed to effectively complete a request or project
• You are able to find the cause of defects in systems and recommend on the method of repair

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• You are able to discuss requests for new installations or extensive repairs as well as explain technical matters in readily understood terms
• You can report progress to Supervisor as needed
• You are able to instruct and supervise Youth as required
• You can work effectively with facility staff and assist other tradespersons
