The Workplace Safety & Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT), which is a quasi-judicial appeals tribunal governed by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, requires a dedicated and skilled registered nurse for the Medical Liaison Office. The Medical Liaison Officer is a nursing position that coordinates and implements the Tribunal's medical investigative function by reviewing case materials, providing advice, conducting specialized casework appraisals, and providing related services to the Vice Chair/Panels and staff of WSIAT. This position is part of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), and the current salary range is $1472.50 to $1880.86 per week.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Reporting to the Manager of the Medical Liaison Office, you will:

• Identify medical issues that are complex, novel and/or controversial in nature;

• Research and conduct critical analyses/appraisals of medically complex cases to determine whether the medical evidence on file is adequate and/or appropriate for consideration by the WSIAT Vice Chair/Panels;

• work closely with and consult the WSIAT medical counsellors on medically complex cases;

• work closely with and facilitate WSIAT's access to external expert medical assessors (health professionals);

• coordinate the acquiring of medical and scientific information for general and case specific use;

• research, analyze, and recommend medical reports, information, and documents that would enhance WSIAT's understanding of and ability to deal with medical evidence when adjudicating cases;

• organize and conduct formal teaching sessions on medical issues and related WSIAT processes.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You have current registration in good standing as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Medical Knowledge and Skills
• You have 3-5 years recent experience in an acute care setting such as general medicine, general surgery and/or critical care
• You have 3 to 5 years recent experience in occupational health
• You have good knowledge of medical principles and practices, which are used in evaluating the medical aspects of cases
• You have knowledge of medical assessment methodologies to conduct reviews and appraisals of cases, and provide professional advice/assessments.
• You have knowledge of various medical specialties to determine appropriate specialist advisors
• You have knowledge of medical conditions, especially occupational diseases and injuries, to appraise medical evidence
• You have an understanding of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act

Research, Analytical and Planning Skills:
• You have advanced case management skills to analyze cases, research relevant materials and past WSIAT decisions
• You have excellent analytical and problem solving skills
• You have sound research and analysis skills, to conduct medical case assessments
• You have experience in research or familiarity with medical research terms and interpretation of results
• You have effective planning and training skills to develop and deliver training initiatives

Communication, Interpersonal and Technical Skills:
• You have strong interpersonal skills, with the demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
• You have strong written and oral communication skills to provide consultation and advice on complex medical issues
• You have relevant computer skills (MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Adobe) and the ability to work with databases
