This job posting represents multiple positions within different ministries and at various locations across Ontario. What can I expect to do in this role?

Work Description

You may be required to work on some or all of the following tasks:
  • Position will process artifacts from archaeological excavations.
  • Collections Management duties will include re-packing collections and organizing documentation related to previous digs into a computerized database.
  • The position will include fieldwork opportunities across Ontario, particularly the first 2 weeks in July at the Spadina Museum, Toronto. This will involve the responsibility of supervising children, ages 10-14, in the excavation and keeping records of the work.


How do I qualify?

Mandatory

You must meet all eligibility criteria on the first day of employment to be eligible for these positions.

  1. Student Status: All summer jobs require a “student” status. A student is defined as someone enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution (currently or for the fall semester) or has graduated within the past six months. If you graduated in January, you could apply for and start a summer student position in the Ontario Public Service up until June of that year.

  2. Age: You must be a minimum of 15 years of age. There is no maximum age limit for applying to summer student positions. You must meet all age requirements by May 1st.

  3. Residency: You must be a resident of Ontario during the term of employment.

  4. Work Status – Ability to Work in Canada: You must be legally entitled to work in Canada. You are also required to have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) upon being hired.


Communication and Interpersonal Skills

  • You apply your written communication skills to document findings and prepare a variety of documents (e.g. reports, data records, etc.).
  • You apply your verbal communication skills to communicate and share your knowledge with staff and/or clients, and to present your findings.
  • You apply your initiative and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team and participate in meetings.


Analytical and Organizational Skills

  • You work independently or as part of a team; you plan, organize, and prioritize your time to meet competing deadlines.


Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • You have knowledge and experience in archaeology and archaeological fieldwork.


Other Requirements

  • You are able to work in an outdoor environment with some light physical activity involved, including light lifting in accordance with the Employment Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety regulations.
  • You have a valid Ontario G2 (or higher) Driver's Licence or equivalent. (Note: This position requires frequent travel to sites around Southern and Eastern Ontario.)
