The Government and Consumer Services Legal Branch of the Civil Law Division, Ministry of the Attorney General has immediate openings for one (1) senior counsel.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Reporting to a Deputy Director of the Government and Consumer Services Legal Branch, you would be responsible for providing strategic legal advice and support to the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services (MGCS) and its various registrars on a broad range of operational and policy issues in relation to Ontario government's insurance programs and insurance law generally including:

• Developing and advising on legislation and regulations
• Supporting client policy development, special projects and operational work
• Drafting and reviewing orders in council, minister's appointments
• Providing legal advice on insurance, including related policy issues and relevant areas of law
• Assisting in the management of Ontario's Protection program
• Assisting with claims management, risk management and insurance procurement issues
• Liaising with and assisting in the management of outside retentions regarding insurance coverage and litigation
• Providing legal advice, opinions and assisting with the enforcement and collection activity for the Minister

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario

Technical Legal Experience

• Demonstrated experience in providing written and oral legal advice and opinions on an urgent basis including providing advice related to compliance with the legislation governing insurance and other statutes relevant to the MGCS and other regulatory matters primarily with respect to statutory interpretation and administrative law
• Demonstrated experience in court preferably in the area of road and general liability
• Experience with policy development, and the development of legislation and regulation
• Experience drafting orders in council, administrative agreements, memoranda of understanding, and other similar documents
• Knowledge of administrative and regulatory law, practice and procedures
• Ability to recognize and assess legal implications in Ministry practices and programs
• Demonstrated experience in insurance, procurement law, including experience handling related transactions and reviewing, drafting and negotiating related documents
• Demonstrated experience in effective resolution of insurance-related disputes
• Demonstrated experience in the retention and management of external counsel
• Knowledge of government procurement policies and practices

• Demonstrated interpersonal and oral/written communication skills
• Demonstrated client service skills
• Ability to handle a high-volume practice and advise on urgent matters with short turnaround times
