Are you interested assisting a team of airport professionals providing essential air transportation for the people of northern Ontario? If so, consider this position with the Ministry of Transportation. This is a seasonal position that works approximately 10 months per year, from September to May. The successful applicant returns to the same position each year after the summer break.

The Division
The Operations Division provides leadership related to ministry transportation activities by developing operational policies, providing end-user focused services for the transportation network, and maintaining and operating assets, infrastructure and services. Our division manages regional corridors, emergency management, maintenance and operations. We also play a pivotal role in building and managing transportation related stakeholder relationships and partnerships in the province and advocate for regional needs.

The Office
The Remote Airports Office is responsible for overseeing the maintenance and staffing of day to day operations at the 29 airports in Northern Ontario. The day to day operations includes working in cooperation with Transport Canada, Safety and Regulatory Compliance, Environment, and Operations Support. Airport Operations is also responsible for building and facility maintenance, working in cooperation with NAV Canada and air carriers to ensure the safety of the airport, runways, facilities and the people who utilize them.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this position you will assist the Airport Foreperson to:

• operate the airport facility
• maintain the runway, airport buildings and operate airport maintenance equipment
• inform pilots and airport users concerning safe airport conditions

How do I qualify?

Mandatory requirements:

• valid class G driver's licence, or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario
• ability to complete First Aid and CPR training, provided by employer

Equipment Operation Skills

• you can use heavy equipment (packer, bulldozer, loader, grader and dump truck)
• you can use small equipment (chainsaw, welder, circular saw, drill press, and grinder)

Important general skills:

• reliable individual interested in improving the airport and services
• clear oral communications skills in order to inform pilots and airport users concerning safe airport conditions
• ability to maintain inventories for fuel, oil, and equipment parts

Technical ability:

• ability to service and operate small (tire repair, saws, drills) and large equipment (trucks, loaders, graders) for runway and road maintenance
• ability to maintain and arrange for repair of buildings including windows, doors, heating, water and septic systems
• ability to plan and organize supplies, equipment and work
• ability to obtain DZ driver's licence and aeronautical radio permit, training will be provided
• ability to complete written daily and monthly reports

Technical Ability

• you can repair and service equipment
• you can maintain equipment and tires
• Has basic computer skills in order to perform daily administrative duties in order to record, document and track required data (examples can be but not limited to runway condition reporting, fuel and lubricant usage reports, requisitioning materials and equipment parts, labour and equipment time sheets)
