Bring your laboratory expertise to the Science and Research Branch of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. Use your skills to solve insect and disease problems to keep forests healthy. The forest health lab investigates trees and their pests to identify impacts and develop management strategies. Under the general supervision and in a team environment, you will lead and conduct technical duties in the forest health laboratory. You will assist with the planning of experiments, handle and analyze data and prepare reports.
What can I expect to do in this role?
In this role, you will:
• assist the Forest Health Research Scientist with the supervision, operation and management of the forest health laboratory
• execute the technical work of the forest health laboratory, under the direction of the Forest Health Research Scientist
• assist with field and greenhouse work and disease trials
How do I qualify?
Mandatory
You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
Laboratory and scientific expertise:
• You possess a thorough knowledge of DNA extraction, amplification, electrophoresis, sequencing, quantitative PCR, and demonstrated experience troubleshooting molecular procedures.
• You have demonstrated knowledge of laboratory methods used in plant pathology and/or genetics, and the ability to use, modify and adapt equipment and techniques for various phases of genetics work.
Biology knowledge:
• You have general knowledge of plant biology, including structure and collection methods.
• You have general pathology or microbiology knowledge, including biology and handling of disease-causing organisms (fungi, bacteria, viruses).
Data Management and computer proficiency:
• You have knowledge of sound data management principles and the demonstrated ability to prepare written data summaries.
• You are proficient in the use of personal computers for data storage and retrieval;
Communication and interpersonal skills:
• You have proven interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with the public, staff and clients with tact and good judgment when explaining programs or training staff/students.
Project management skills:
• You possess leadership qualities and project management skills to coordinate and implement several research projects concurrently.
Work safety knowledge:
• You have knowledge of worker responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
• You have knowledge of safe working practices around the laboratory, and use of hazardous chemicals.
