Toronto South Detention Centre needs a dynamic and motivated health care professional to assume the role of Manager, Infirmary and IO Health. The Manager will assist with developing and implementing health care standards, practices and procedures, and plan, coordinate, and evaluate health care programs/services. In addition to technical nursing experience, we need a strong leader to support a multi-disciplinary team to ensure a safe environment for both inmates and staff through the effective delivery of medical and nursing programs and services.
The Toronto South Detention Centre is Ontario's largest maximum security detention centre and health care services are provided 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

What can I expect to do in this role?
In this role, you will:
• Supervise the provision of health care services for the institution on an assigned shift, or in the absence of the Manage, Health Care Services, by ensuring the safe, efficient and effective operation of the institution's health care services centre.
• Plan, organize, and direct the effective day-to-day delivery of health care services through scheduling, deployment and assignment of staff and resources.
• Assist in the development and implementation of health care policies, practices and procedures;
• Provide professional direction and coaching to subordinate staff.
• Maintain records and statistics to identify trends and developments that have critical program/service delivery implications and develop recommendations for mitigation.
• Prepare and present educational and training programs to health care staff
• Review and process Freedom of Information (FOI) requests for offender medical information.

How do I qualify?
Mandatory
• You are currently registered as a Registered Nurse in good standing with the Colleges of Nurses of Ontario.

• You can hold staff accountable and ensure professional standards are met by developing, maintaining and evaluating procedures and methods for delivery of health services, recommending improvements as needed.
• You demonstrate flexibility to respond to shifting demands, priorities, and stressors.
Specialized Knowledge
• You have knowledge of nursing administration, operations, health care program planning, evaluation, and health education.
• You have knowledge of health care professional regulatory bodies, practices and standards to ensure compliance and can interpret relevant legislation (e.g. Regulated Health Care Professions Act, Health Care Consent Act, Mental Health Act).
• You have the ability to acquire knowledge of correctional philosophies, policies and procedures relating to health care services in a security-based adult correctional institution.
• You have a general level of understanding about emergency response procedures.
Relationship Management and Communication Skills
• You demonstrate the ability to exchange information and provide advice on offender needs to medical practitioners, and to discuss medical issues with offender family members.
• You can liaise effectively with community partners such as Mental Health centres, Public Health departments, private physicians/specialists, and hospitals.
• You can build and maintain collaborative working relationships across all health care teams and departments, modeling the value of partnerships within the department.
• You can negotiate and resolve service delivery issues with other staff and departments.
Evaluation and Analytical Skills
• You can maintain records and statistics to identify trends and develop action plans to mitigate identified risk
• You can evaluate and ensure consistency of professional standards and procedures of health care are provided and maintained
• You can identify gaps and assess risks to make sound decisions surrounding continued health care and treatment needs for inmates
