What can I expect to do in this role?
In this role, you will:
• provide provincial-level leadership and coordination of the Biodiversity and Monitoring Section (BAMS) aquatics monitoring programs and staff
• lead the development and recommendation of program strategies, tactical/operational objectives, and annual work plans to align with Ministry business needs and priorities
• liaise with colleagues to assess current and future Ministry science priorities for the program, lead program reviews, transfer program plans and results, and facilitate the communication of program activities to internal and external clients
• lead the integration of Science and Research Branch aquatics monitoring, chair the Science and Research Branch aquatics monitoring science team and Inland Lakes Task Team, and collaborate with research partners on program design, information and data management, etc.
• participate on other science teams, provincial task teams, technical committees and working groups, and provide expert advice related to sustainable resource management and the development and implementation of aquatic monitoring programs
• facilitate scheduling of science activities and communications, ensuring good communication and collaboration with aquatics program staff and management
• support and identify technical/professional development and successional opportunities for staff team
Please note that this position will require you to travel throughout the province.
How do I qualify?
Technical expertise:
• You have advanced knowledge of relevant aquatics legislation policies, procedures, and programs.
• You have expert knowledge of resource management practices, guideline requirements and planning tools, and aquatics population and habitat field operations, particularly as related to inventory, monitoring, and assessment.
• You have comprehensive knowledge of aquatic population and habitat field operations, particularly as related to inventory, monitoring, and assessment.
• You have advanced knowledge and understanding of the aquatics (population and habitat) ecology of Ontario, as well as related scientific theories, methods, practices and principles and their application in resource management.
• You have understanding of stakeholder perspectives on biodiversity and management issues.
Analytical and problem-solving skills:
• You have strong critical thinking and assessment skills related to science and technical options to address business needs and the ability to develop aquatics monitoring program business cases.
• You have advanced knowledge of experimental design and statistical analyses (e.g. Bayesian and Frequentist) to ensure appropriate monitoring, analytical and reporting frame works are employed.
Program and project management:
• You have the ability to effectively facilitate task groups to bring in products on time within the framework of a larger project and business analysis skills, supporting the preparation and maintenance of annual budgets, staff requirements, and financial controls.
• You have strong organizational skills and time management skills to meet programs' tight deadlines under stressful conditions.
Interpersonal and communication skills:
• You have conflict resolution skills to be able to bring contrary views to consensus.
• You can work independently and can work in a team environment.
• You have strong interpersonal and communication skills, and are able to provide team leadership and facilitation to a provincial team working in multiple locations.
• You have strong verbal and written communication skills to speak at meetings, give presentations and prepare reports.
