What can I expect to do in this role?
As a Graphic Designer, you will:
• Participate in design sessions and provide creative input during the conceptualization and design of graphic content for new and existing exhibit experiences
• Prepare preliminary storyboards, sketches, and design proposals to support the exhibit development process.
• Work collaboratively and creatively to propose specific graphic design work for stand-alone pieces or to work within the guidelines of an overall design direction for piece(s) that are part of a larger exhibition.
• Use specialized graphic design skills and industry standard software applications to produce thoughtful graphics solutions for use in a variety of exhibition elements.
• Provide advice to team members regarding the theoretical and technical possibilities of various graphic design approaches.
• Plan and execute workflow with team members to ensure projects are completed on time and on budget.
Please note that this position is irregular/on-call with no guarantee of hours per week. How do I qualify?
Technical Knowledge and Skills
• Advanced experience in and knowledge of graphic design work and its principles
• Demonstrated creative and innovative track record in communication concepts in a public environment
• Advanced experience in and knowledge of interface, accessibility, affordance principles, and human behaviours related to use of graphic communication
• Strong understanding of how to integrate text and visual design for public audiences
• Demonstrated technical skills related to the use of multimedia editing tools such as Adobe After Effects, Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator and other industry applicable software.
Planning and Organizational Skills
• Demonstrated ability to conceive, plan, estimate and implement graphic design that fits overall project objectives.
• Excellent time management skills to independently develop, plan and complete work within the parameters of an assignment.
• Ability to exercise good judgment in order to identify, solve and escalate problems as required.
• Planning and organizational skills to advise manager on project-related budgets and timelines, preferred courses of action, and related risks/benefits.
Communication Skills
• Demonstrated ability to communicate complex ideas and concepts within a public environment, particularly for a target audience of families with children.
• Ability to collaborate with team members effectively in order to develop designs that are consistent with the overall plan and concept of the exhibit
• Ability and willingness to take initiative in order to resolve conflict, reach consensus, and contribute to successful outcomes through teamwork.
• Strong interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills to communicate effectively with internal and external clients, managers, colleagues and vendors.
