OPS COVID-19 Safe Workplace Directive

Effective October 1, 2021, the OPS COVID-19 Safe Workplace Directive will require all Ontario Public Service employees to provide proof they are fully vaccinated, meaning they are fully vaccinated as defined by the Ministry of Health (refer to: COVID-19 Fully Vaccinated Status in Ontario), including 14 calendar days have passed since receiving their final dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Employees who do not provide proof of full vaccination will be deemed 'not vaccinated' under the Directive and will be required to attend a vaccine education program and undergo regular rapid antigen testing. What can I expect to do in this role?

Work Description

As an Ontario Place Parks Services Landscape Technician, you may have the opportunity to work on some or all of the following activities:
  • Be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of the park to ensure a clean and safe environment.
  • Provide garbage removal services throughout the site by emptying receptacles into bins and transporting bins to central waste collection area by motorized utility vehicle (gator/golf cart).
  • Assist staff with ground and lawn maintenance, brush removal, and clearing culverts.
  • Operate a variety of small gas-powered landscape tools to maintain landscaped spaces.
  • Assist in the set-up, monitoring, and clean-up of events.
  • Identify problems and attempt to resolve them before deferring to the Assistant Manager.
  • Assist with a variety of other tasks around the park as needed.
Note: You may be required to work in an outdoor environment with some physical activity involved, including lifting and carrying weighted items in accordance with the Employment Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety regulations.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

You must meet all eligibility criteria on the first day of employment to be eligible for these positions.

  1. Student Status: All summer jobs require a “student” status. A student is defined as someone enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution (currently or for the fall semester) or has graduated within the past six months. If you graduated in January, you could apply for and start a summer student position in the Ontario Public Service up until June of that year.

  2. Age: You must be a minimum of 18 years of age. There is no maximum age limit for applying to summer student positions. You must meet all age requirements by May 1st.

  3. Residency: You must be a resident of Ontario during the term of employment.

  4. Work Status – Ability to Work in Canada: You must be legally entitled to work in Canada. You are also required to have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) upon being hired.


Communication and Interpersonal Skills

  • You apply your excellent customer service and verbal/written communication skills to respond to phone, email, and in-person inquiries, and provide information to internal clients and/or the public.
  • You apply your initiative and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.


Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • You apply basic safe operating practices to work with machinery and equipment.
  • You are able to conduct mechanical maintenance of grounds, buildings, and lawn care equipment and tools (e.g. tractors, lawn mowers, weed trimmers and portable pumps).


Analytical and Organizational Skills

  • You work independently or as part of a team; you plan, organize and prioritize your time to meet competing deadlines
  • You are able to follow directions and seek clarification as needed.


Other Requirements

  • You are at least 18 years of age.
  • You must have a valid Ontario G1 (or higher) Driver's Licence or equivalent.
  • You are able to work in an outdoor environment in a variety of weather conditions with some physical activity involved, including lifting and carrying weighted items in accordance with the Employment Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety regulations.
  • You are comfortable working around water.
  • You are willing and able to be flexible and to work assigned shifts. Shifts will vary in length and days of week due to events. A schedule will be provided 2 weeks in advance.
  • You will be provided with training on the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
