What can I expect to do in this role?
In this role you will:
• prepare a wide variety of foods through standard volume cooking methods, ensuring adherence to prescribed menus, work schedules and dietary charts
• inspect kitchen facilities and equipment to ensure proper hygiene and safety standards are maintained
• assist with ordering food and supplies, receiving and storing large deliveries with light and heavy items
• work with staff to develop a kitchen work program for the youth to learn about food preparation
• prepare and serve food using a variety of kitchen tools and equipment or varying sizes and weights (i.e. mixer, pots/pans, heavy trays, etc.)
How do I qualify?
Culinary Knowledge and Experience:
• You have good knowledge of culinary skills demonstrated by a cooks certificate issued by appropriate ministry or proven equivalent level of experience.
• You have knowledge of food preparation and storage techniques and procedures.
• You have knowledge of proper use of kitchen equipment and tools.
• You have demonstrated experience in volume cooking usually gained within a facility or commercial setting.
• You have proven ability to prepare special diet meals due to medical or religious needs.
• You have good knowledge of safe food handling practices and standards of sanitation.
General Skills:
• You have proven communication and interpersonal skills to work with staff, deal with issues and instruct and train kitchen workers.
• You can make decisions regarding substitution of food items and adjust quantities accordingly.
