What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

• Design, manage & implement the Psychological Services for the Probation & Parole Service.
• Perform clinical duties for the Probation & Parole Services including planning, coordinating and/or supervising the delivery of psychological services.
• Facilitate offender psychological rehabilitation by providing consultation and education to Probation/Parole Officers and those involved in rehabilitation programs and reintegration of offenders into the community.
• Provide consultation, advice, and education to members of Probation & Parole Services regarding rehabilitation, counselling needs, recommending new approaches to client care, and contribute to the evaluation of overall program effectiveness.
• Assist in facility staff training as required and represent psychology on internal and external committees.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You are registered in good standing as a Psychologist in the Province of Ontario and have a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
• Proficiency in English and oral French at the advanced level

Specialized Knowledge and Skills

• You have knowledge of science and practices of psychology, including a full range of psychotherapeutic and assessment techniques.
• You are able to plan, conduct and co-ordinate psychological services, apply complex treatment techniques, and provide consultation and advice on diagnosis and treatment of offenders.
• You have knowledge of forensic psychological theories, practices and procedures used in a correctional setting.
• You have knowledge of policies and procedures, and provincial/federal statutes relating to the practice of psychology.
• You have knowledge of program evaluation techniques in order to evaluate program effectiveness, e.g., effectiveness of specific treatment programs, which impact the formulation of treatment objectives of the facility, and to report observations to manager that may affect offender program activities.
• You have knowledge of community resources/services and related regulations to make appropriate referrals, and advocate offender assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and integration into the community.

Communication, Consultation, and Interpersonal Skills

• You have the ability to use specialized technical terminology to express to convey ideas in clear terms when communicating with Ministry staff at training sessions and with offenders.
• You have discretion and sensitivity regarding the discussion of diagnosis, treatment and progress with the offenders, and in dealing with the families to obtain information.
• You have persuasion skills to have offenders accept treatment and encouraging offender acceptance of psychological services in the community.
• You can maintain strong working relationships with Probation & Parole staff and staff of the community agencies.

Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills

• You have analytical skills to determine the most appropriate diagnostic approaches from a range of alternatives depending on offender history and current indicators.

• You are able to provide diagnostic assessments based on the interpretation of tests, interviews and other methods.

• You are able to formulate treatment and rehabilitation programs within the Probation & Parole setting, to enhance the well-being of the offender and recommend approaches to offender care.

• You are able to evaluate the efficiency of treatment and rehabilitative activities or programs to identify effective solutions.

Other Essential Skills

• You have the ability to organize, coordinate and supervise psychological services.
• You have computer skills to operate Windows applications/software including; word processing, databases, e-mail and the internet, to communicate, input/retrieve data, prepare reports, evaluate psychological tests and maintain case documentation and statistics.

    Employees who do not provide proof of full vaccination will be deemed ‘not vaccinated' under the Employer's policy and will be required to attend a vaccine education program, as determined by the Employer. Employees who are not vaccinated under the policy with a valid medical exemption will not be required to attend a vaccine education program. All employees working in congregate living settings must undergo regular rapid antigen testing, regardless of vaccination status.
