ELIGIBILITY FOR THIS COMPETITION IS RESTRICTED TO STEP 1 CANDIDATES INCLUDING OPS ALOC AND OCAA LAWYERS living or working within 125 km of this location. Note: Eligible lawyers from outside the Area of Search may apply but will not be entitled to relocation or travel expenses for the transfer as set out below.

The Office of the Assistant Deputy Attorney General (ADAG), Court Services Division (CSD) is looking for a strategic and outcome focused counsel who is motivated by challenging work and able to flourish in a fast-paced environment with multiple, often changing, priorities and deadlines. We need someone who can identify and proactively resolve issues, is dedicated to excellence in justice services, and possesses the drive, determination and desire to contribute to the overall success of CSD.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Duties Will Include:

• Working in a fast-paced environment as a team member of Office of the Assistant Deputy Attorney General.
• Legal advisor to the Assistant Deputy Attorney General, which includes representing her interests and concerns in briefings and review of materials requiring her approval (e.g., Cabinet Office documents, briefing notes, housebook notes, communications, and freedom of information requests).
• Liaise with and provide strategic advice and support on legal and policy issues to divisional colleagues, directors, and executive legal officers of the courts, other divisions within the Ministry, and the Deputy Attorney General's office, in criminal, civil and family law matters, with a view of modernizing court administration for the province.
• Effectively manage issues and key justice participant relationships.
• Briefing senior ministry staff.
• Provide written and oral legal opinions, presentations, correspondence, directives, and other materials, as required.
• Actively participate in strategic planning and management of the division as a member of the Divisional Management Committee.
• Support and promote a productive team environment, which reflects the fostering of a culture of excellence and the creation of an inclusive, diverse, professional, respectful and accessible workplace.
• Support and promote modernization in the ADAG's office by helping with advance planning and implementation of court services transformation.
• Actively partnered with the Ministry's Project Implementation Branch, and Justice Technology Services and the Modernize Division, Ministry of the Solicitor General to ensure that Ministry transformation and operational planning reflects CSD business goals, to provide timely access to subject matter expertise and align initiatives and priorities for the Division.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario.

Knowledge and Skills

• Knowledge of provincial and federal statutes and regulations, including the Family Law Rules, the Rules of Civil Procedure, Criminal Code of Canada, the Courts of Justice Act, Provincial Offences Act and related legislation.
• Knowledge and understanding of government directions, priorities and decision-making processes and the legislative/regulatory process, related to the justice sector and in particular in the area of court operations
• Knowledge and understanding of the role of the judiciary and justice partners and stakeholders in the justice system in Ontario.
• Demonstrated experience drafting and reviewing legislation and regulations, legal opinions, briefing notes, house book notes, options papers, presentation materials and correspondence.
• Demonstrated conflict resolution/interpersonal skills along with well-developed negotiation and relationship management skills.
• Sound judgment and high political acuity
• Proven ability to identify, manage and problem solve complex and sensitive issues and manage changing priorities under tight and shifting timelines
• Demonstrated ability to maintain and promote a client-focused organization by developing and sustaining positive, productive relationships with justice participants including the judiciary, and other governments and ministries
• Demonstrated experience supporting and contributing to a culture of diversity, inclusion, equity and accessibility and a respectful work environment.
• Demonstrated oral and written communication skills including an ability to write in plain language
• Strategic and innovative thinking with the ability to be flexible and creative
• Aptitude and desire to work in a team environment
• Ability to use computer software packages (e.g., Microsoft Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Quicklaw)
