What can I expect to do in this role?

OPP Community Policing Assistant Work Description:
• Promote the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and local OPP Detachment/Program area to the public
• Complete research assignments/projects, compile statistical information and other administrative tasks
• Plan, organize, coordinate and manage daily assigned work
• Support Ontario's Mobilization and Engagement Model of Community Policing through: participation in community social development/crime prevention programs, relationship building and accompanying officers on patrol

OPP Indigenous Policing Bureau Assistant Work Description:
• Promote the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Indigenous Policing Bureau to the public
• Complete research assignments/projects, compile statistical information and other administrative tasks
• Plan, organize, coordinate and manage daily assigned work
• Support Ontario's Mobilization and Engagement Model of Community Policing through: participation in community social development/crime prevention programs, relationship building and assisting Provincial Liaison Team officers
• Support Indigenous Policing Bureau programs and units in a variety of ways

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

You must meet all eligibility criteria by the first day of employment (contracts begin between May and July):

Student Status: You must be enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution (currently or for the fall semester) OR you must have graduated within the past six months (for example, if you graduated in December, you can apply for and start a summer student position up until June of the following year).

Age: You must be a minimum of 15 years of age. There is no maximum age limit. Some positions require candidates to be a minimum of 18 years of age as of the first day of employment.

Residency: You must be a resident of Ontario during the term of employment.

Work Status: You must be legally entitled to work in Canada. You are also required to have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) upon being hired.

Job Requirements for OPP Community Policing Assistant:

Communication and Interpersonal Skills
• You apply your oral communication skills to promote OPP community policing programs and events (e.g. assemble displays on public safety, participate in summer festivals and distribute crime prevention material)
• You apply your written communication skills to prepare a variety of documents (e.g. reports, document findings, record data)
• You apply your initiative and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team and participate in meetings

Technical Skills and Knowledge
• You apply your investigative skills to assist in crime prevention initiatives that target the local needs of the community

Analytical and Organizational Skills
• You apply your administrative and organizational skills to maintain records, daily log entries, daily statistics etc
• You work independently or as part of a team; you plan, organize and prioritize your time to meet competing deadlines

Other Requirements
• Ability to pass an OPP background security clearance
• You are at least 18 years of age
• You must have a valid Ontario G2 Driver's Licence or equivalent (or higher)
• You must have valid and current CPR and First Aid certification

Job Requirements for OPP Indigenous Policing Bureau Assistant:

Communication and Interpersonal Skills
• You apply a community focus and genuine respect for Indigenous communities when involved with community organizations or agencies
• You apply your oral communication skills to promote OPP community policing programs and events (e.g. assemble displays on public safety, participate in summer festivals and distribute crime prevention material)

• You apply your initiative and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team and participate in meetings

Analytical and Organizational Skills
• You apply your knowledge of Indigenous culture, history, socio-economic issues, policing principles, current issues, relevant historical and contemporary policies to provide support to the Indigenous Policing Bureau

Technical Skills and Knowledge
• You apply your administrative and organizational skills to maintain records, daily log entries, daily statistics etc
• You work independently or as part of a team; you plan, organize and prioritize your time to meet competing deadlines
