What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:
• provide a full professional level of interpretation for all levels of courts (both in person and/or through remote technology)
• ensure that the meaning, feeling and intent of the original and often technical words of testimony spoken are accurately transmitted
• ensure that appropriate legal terminology is used
• provide technical guidance on procedural matters or interpretation problems, informing/clarifying directives
• travel to various court sites
• assist courts, in locating and scheduling freelance interpreters

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You will be required to attain and maintain accreditation in English and French, in accordance with ministry accreditation testing, training, practices and standards.
• You have valid driver's license for travelling to/from court locations for interpreting assignments.

Specialized Knowledge:

You have:
• knowledge of legal terminology to ensure accurate rendering of legal terms and ideas
• knowledge of interpretation methods
• understanding of courtroom proceedings

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

You have:
• superior oral communication skills, both in terms of vocabulary and facility with grammar and sentence structure, in English and French, to provide oral interpretations on a variety of subjects
• demonstrated cultural knowledge and sensitivity to the target culture/language which is being translated
• interpersonal skills to provide client service, maintain the confidence of those for whom interpretation is provided, and to work cooperatively with staff, stakeholders, court officials and legal counsel

Analytical, Evaluative and Research Skills:

• You have demonstrated analytical and evaluative skills to listen to original statements and render a message
• You can research and acquire knowledge of terminology of subject matters not immediately known for upcoming trial situation

Organizational Skills:

• You have organizational skills and the ability to work under pressure

Other Essential Skills:

• You have demonstrated understanding of quality service standards and to deal with challenging situations demonstrating a high degree of emotional intelligence, professionalism, respect and integrity
