Are you interested in playing a key role in ensuring compliance with tax legislation? Demonstrate your exceptional accounting skills and provide group leadership and technical guidance to other auditors as well as process assessments, adjustments, exemptions and refunds as a Senior Auditor with the Compliance Branch, Tax Compliance and Benefits Division in the Ministry of Finance.

The Compliance Branch of the Tax Compliance and Benefits Division supports career development, diversity and inclusive workplace strategies. Your knowledge of various tax statutes and legislation is a transferable skill that will aid in your success in the auditor role. Dependent on ongoing business requirements, the successful candidates will be able to gain enhanced exposure to, and knowledge of, multiple tax statutes so that your knowledge base is varied and fulsome.

Note: There are 3 (three) permanent positions located at 5 Park Home Ave., North York and 1 (one) permanent position located at 130 Dufferin Ave., London. Alternate work arrangements may be available.

What can I expect to do in this role?

You will:
• conduct large and complex field audits
• research client and draft audit plans
• provide interpretative guidance on tax legislation and policy
• identify areas of potential non-compliance and educate client on future compliance
• discuss audit findings with manager, taxpayers and their representatives
• provide team leadership and technical guidance and training to other audit staff
• prepare reports and working papers

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

Successful completion of one of the following is required: (1) Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the CGA Program, OR (2) all courses in the CMA Pre Professional Program, OR (3) a recognized university degree or college diploma, including courses in Introductory Financial Accounting, Intermediate Financial Accounting, Auditing, Taxation and either Cost Accounting or Management Accounting.

Candidates selected for an interview will be asked to provide proof of designation/academic qualifications. Candidates will be asked to clearly indicate on their transcripts which of their courses meet the position's academic requirement. Candidates who obtained their qualifications outside Canada will be asked to provide proof that these qualifications are recognized as equivalencies in Canada.

Note: Periodic overnight travel throughout North America is required.

Technical Knowledge:

• You have demonstrated knowledge of accounting theories, principles, practices, auditing techniques and standards, including computer-assisted auditing techniques (CAAT), and financial analysis within a wide variety of accounting and business systems, in order to perform large, complex audits or compliance projects
• You can prepare documentation for processing assessments and refunds
• You have demonstrated the ability to interpret and apply provincial and federal tax legislation, related policies and procedures, inter-jurisdictional agreements, ministry guidelines and administrative practices, and recent tax rulings, in order to provide information to taxpayers, conduct large and complex audits, and provide technical guidance to other auditors
• You can identify non-compliance and determine adjustments
• You can determine tax liabilities and level of compliance
• You are proficient with various computer software and computer-assisted audit techniques to perform large audits, and prepare letters and computerized audit working papers

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

• You have effective communication and interpersonal skills, to provide assistance to taxpayers and/or their representatives, encourage and promote voluntary compliance, educate taxpayers in the requirements of the legislation, and provide alternatives for taxpayers to fulfill their responsibilities
• You have effective oral and written communication skills to discuss technical aspects of tax legislation, and accounting and auditing requirements, conduct effective interviews, and prepare audit documents
• You have interpersonal skills to effectively manage the audit relationship with taxpayers and/or their representatives and promote understanding and acceptance of the audit findings by taxpayers and their representatives, specifically in areas of non-compliance with the tax legislation, and the resultant assessment or reassessment
• You can deal effectively with disputes, and adversarial and confrontational situations arising from taxpayer objections or challenges
• You have leadership skills to provide technical guidance and training to audit staff

Judgement, Research and Analytical Skills:

• You have effective research and analytical skills to perform detailed and complex audits, analyze complex financial documents and related information, evaluate results and resolve compliance problems
• You can use judgement to make decisions and recommendations impacting taxpayers' and employers' fiscal operations and tax liabilities
• You can research and draft audit plans and strategies within expected time frames
