Are you an experienced food service professional? If so, consider bringing your culinary expertise to the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre where you will prepare, cook, and serve meals to inmates.

Please note:
• These positions are irregularly scheduled, on-call working 0 to 40 hours per week, with no guaranteed minimum shifts per week. The average amount of hours is typically 12-24 hours per week.
• The incumbent will be required to unload large deliveries and lift materials up to 30 kilograms/65 pounds

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role you will:
• Provide team leadership within the cooking operation for the correctional institution
• Prepare and assemble meals
• Maintain an inventory of supplies
• Transport supplies to the kitchen from storage areas
• Unload supplies and inventory from delivery truck using a pallet jack
• Ensure the safety and security of staff and equipment
• Maintain proper sanitary conditions in the kitchen area

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You must have a Journeyman Chef's Certificate as issued by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities or sufficient equivalent experience in volume cooking
• Ability to work shift work, weekends, and holidays

Food Services Knowledge and Skills

• You have knowledge of volume cooking/baking methods and procedures
• You have experience with food preparation and storage procedures/methods
• You have knowledge of portion control standards
• You have experience preparing a variety of foods and restricted diets
• You know food safety practices and proper use of kitchen equipment
• You understand and can apply health and safety practices and standards (such as Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, Public Health Act, Health Protection and Promotion Act, Sanitation Code for Canada's Food Industry, etc.)
• You have demonstrated ability to understand and follow organizational policies/protocols in order to acquire knowledge of institutional policies and maintain safety and security of kitchen

Communication and Team Leadership Skills

• You can provide instruction and direction in cooking methods and kitchen cleanliness
• You have demonstrated tact and diplomacy to work with ministry staff and service providers to address issues
• You have written communication skills to prepare various reports

Other Essential Skills

• You have analytical and problem-solving skills to identify, assess, and resolve equipment/appliance malfunctions, supply shortage, sanitation and hygiene control, and food service issues
• You have basic computer skills to input, track and record data

    Employees who do not provide proof of full vaccination will be deemed ‘not vaccinated' under the Employer's policy and may be required to attend a vaccine education program, as determined by the Employer. Employees who are not vaccinated under the policy with a valid medical exemption will not be required to attend a vaccine education program. All employees working in congregate living settings must undergo regular rapid antigen testing, regardless of vaccination status.
