About the job
As a member of the death investigation team you will:
•provide broad-based medical expertise to support and oversee the MAiD process through facilitating the reporting of MAiD deaths
•identify and analyze relevant information and documents and interview parties including clinicians as well as family and friends of the deceased person
•participate in the ongoing collection and management of accurate MAiD-related data for tracking and trend analysis
•provide advice to the Manager, MAiD and Chief Coroner to determine appropriate next steps
•provide recommendations to the Chief Coroner and Deputies due to severity of MAiD implications and assist the Chief Coroner in overseeing the implementation and evaluation of innovative approaches to service delivery related to MAiD
•develop and maintain working relationships with a variety of stakeholders in death investigation, including families, forensic pathologists, forensic scientists, law enforcement personnel and other agencies
•participate in inter-ministerial and inter-governmental committees /task forces and maintain ongoing liaison to work collaboratively on issues and projects
•collaborate with other medical professionals in other death investigations including; deaths reported by the Office of the Registrar General (RG) and death investigations of MAiD deaths where circumstances intersect with the health care system within the applicable investigative frameworks.
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
BSc in Nursing and current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in order to provide professional nursing expertise.
Technical Knowledge and Experience
You have:
•General knowledge of pathophysiology, healthcare system organization, palliative and end-of-life care, and medical practices and standards in order to identify possible concerns in care that arise as part of the review process and application to legislative compliance.
•Understanding of the role, activities, and mandate of the Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service, death investigation processes, and the role of Coroners.
•Awareness of relevant legislation such as the Criminal Code of Canada, Federal and Provincial MAiD legislation, Coroners Act, and Anatomy Act, to understand their application to MAiD oversight and death. investigations
Analytical Skills
•You can develop and implement processes, guidelines, standards and protocols for the conduct of death investigations across the province
•You possess critical thinking to evaluate identify and assess issues and trends with potential impact on the death investigation system or that require involvement of the Chief Coroner.
Consultative and Advisory Skills
•You can recommend new/revised approaches, policies and procedures to the Chief Coroner and Deputy Chief Coroners
•You can make presentations as an active member of the MAiD investigation team
Communication (oral and written) and Presentation Skills
•You have the ability to prepare and present data findings, case reviews, investigation summaries, reports, practice recommendations, and briefing papers.
•You have the ability that to promote professional relationships and the ability to engage in sensitive conversations with families, next of kin, and practitioners following a MAiD death. Ability to provide feedback in a professional manner.
Computer Skills
•The ability to review reported data, research information; prepare briefings, presentations, proposals, observations and recommendations; and enable analytics/data analysis.
