Algonquin Provincial Park is located in south-central Ontario and covers 7,630 square kilometres. It is about 300 km north of Toronto, Ontario and about 300 km west of Ottawa, Ontario. Popular activities at the park include dog sledding, fishing, canoe tripping and camping.

What can I expect to do in this role?

As a Park Warden at Algonquin Provincial Park you will carry out a variety of technical duties and program responsibilities including:

• perform park maintenance functions including developing, maintain and upgrading hiking trails and canoe routes and associated portages and campsites; cleaning campsites, erecting and replacing signage, disposing of garbage and clearing/removing brush and debris, etc.
• operating and maintaining light powered equipment
• facility sanitation and general park maintenance
• carrying out inventory work (GPS data collection) and maintenance of records
• developing and maintaining public relations by providing information/assistance and orientation to staff and park visitors
• conducting enforcement of park rules and regulations
• providing aid and emergency services to staff and park visitors

How do I qualify?

Mandatory requirements:

• You must have the ability to be designated as a Park Warden and meet ministry certification criteria and standards in the use of force.
• You must have a valid driver's license or equivalent to travel within the park.
• You must have the ability to obtain Standard First Aid and CPR Certificate.
• You must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Pleasure Craft Operator Certificate.
• You must possess and have the ability to maintain a valid Firearms Possession/Acquisition licence.
• You must have the ability to travel in fixed wing aircraft.
• You must have the ability to work in inclement weather.
• You must have the ability to work shifts, weekends and statutory holidays as per schedule.

Technical knowledge and experience:

• You are knowledgeable of and experience in resource management practices including bear management.
• You possess knowledge of and experience in building and utility maintenance.
• You are able to interpret, apply and enforce relevant acts, regulations and procedures.
• You have the ability to apply and interpret Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements to ensure a safe work environment.

Technical skills:

• You have the ability and experience in safe outdoor travel and navigation (handling boats/canoes).
• You possess the ability to handle firearms and bear management equipment.
• You demonstrate an ability to operate and maintain a variety of light powered equipment such as lawnmowers, chainsaws, boats and small hand tools.
• You have the ability to provide first response and search and rescue techniques.

Interpersonal and communication skills:

• You possess good organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
• You have the ability to work independently and follow and carry out instructions.
