The Ministry of the Attorney General seeks a solicitor to join the team at the Legal Services Branch of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

As manager of Ontario's extensive public land and its abundant and varied natural resources, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry requires your commercial legal expertise. This is an opportunity to contribute to the legal team that works in the areas of commercial and procurement law.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Your responsibilities would include providing leadership, and legal, governance, policy, and strategic advice. You would manage a full and interesting range of commercial transactions and procurements including sophisticated and complex matters such as working to procure airplanes for ministry firefighters or helping to create a new electronically based licensing system. Working closely with your Divisional colleagues and your clients you will draw on your experience and knowledge to structure sound approaches to commercial transactions and procurements and manage issues related to your work. You would also mentor and provide direction to more junior counsel. This job includes some travel throughout Ontario.

Knowledge and Skills

Through your experience in the area of procurement and commercial transactions, you demonstrate expertise in contract, commercial, and procurement transactions and in negotiating and drafting various legal instruments. You have demonstrated expert knowledge of commercial law, procurement, copyright, and Intellectual Property (IP) and Information Technology (IT) principles. You have background knowledge or experience in administrative law; knowledge of the areas of natural resources administered by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, and Ontario's policies, procedures, guidelines and directives relevant to a government commercial practice. You have shown you are able to prepare well drafted documents and well analyzed, clearly written opinions. Your experience will mean you are versatile and able to recognize and assess legal implications of Ministry and government initiatives. You have demonstrated leadership in a fast paced environment. You also have proven communication skills (both oral and written), interpersonal skills and judgement based on your experience. You are a trusted advisor. You have the ability and willingness to travel throughout Ontario.
