Do you have expert knowledge and experience in resource management and Indigenous culture, with proven planning and coordination skills?

The Far North Branch of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is looking for the right person to fulfill this unique and challenging new role as an Indigenous Initiatives Coordinator.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

• provide expert advice and liaison and coordination services for the delivery of the Indigenous agenda in the Far North of Ontario, including leading and coordinating significant, complex projects, providing policy input, land use and natural resources management, issues management, and strategic and work planning

• advise, support and/or lead/facilitate consultations, engagement and initiatives on behalf of the Far North Branch related to development,
implementation and coordination of land use plans and natural resource programs/issues resolution with Indigenous people

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• must have the ability to travel to attend meetings throughout the Province and the remote communities of the Far North of Ontario

Resource management and planning knowledge:

• knowledge of the theories, principles and practices related to natural resource management, land use planning to lead, facilitate and/or participate in branch and divisional level strategic thinking, planning and problem solving for Indigenous issues and affairs within the Far North of Ontario

Indigenous expertise:

• expertise in Indigenous history, cultures, treaties, issues, and Ontario Indigenous policies, to produce credible, reasoned and viable advice; develop and coordinate effective and consistent delivery of Indigenous relations programs; and implement new initiatives and programs across the branch/division

Communication and interpersonal skills:

• proven ability to deal with diverse groups including the general public; to converse effectively with a variety of contacts, stimulate discussions and provide advice; and to write briefing materials/responses to inquiries
• relationship management, tact and discretion to deal effectively with First Nations and Indigenous organization representatives, interest group representatives, provincial officials, media and general public
• facilitation and negotiation skills to facilitate effective Indigenous engagement in natural resources planning/management and lead or participate in consultations

Planning and coordination skills:

• planning and coordination skills to lead/assist with the preparation and organization of meetings with Indigenous organizations, First Nations communities, special interest and stakeholder groups
• ability to lead and/or support training and development to branch/divisional staff on management of Indigenous issues, problems, engagement; and participate in the development of branch financial annual work plans

Analytical and strategic thinking skills:

• ability to interpret the intent of legislation and policies related to land use and natural resource management as well as Indigenous program, policy and legal obligations
• strategic and analytical skills to advance multiple Indigenous agendas affecting the Far North of Ontario
