Purpose of Position :

To assist in the recovery and restoration of used police equipment and accessories removed from trade-in vehicles,
prepare new vehicles and to perform general garage duties by performing various semi-skilled mechanical tasks.

Duties / Responsibilities :

1. Performs routine maintenance work to repair and refurbish a variety of used police equipment and accessories.

2. Coordinates the receipt of all used police equipment and accessories stripped from trade in vehicles.

3. Performs general garage duties on police vehicles such as applying decals to vehicles, stripping used vehicles, picking up and delivering vehicles to dealers and checking new vehicles for conformance to standards.

4. Performs general upkeep duties as directed e.g. inspecting and maintaining garage equipment and maintaining the
cleanliness of the garage.

5. Performs testing on all repaired equipment and accessories on completion of work.

6. Performs other duties as assigned.

STAFFING AND LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:

• Valid Ontario Class G Drivers License

• Ability to pass an OPP background security investigation.

Knowledge :

Knowledge of:

• basic automotive theories to perform basic equipment maintenance, repair and refurbishing, to determine the nature and extent of repairs and maintenance and to assist skilled tradespersons with upkeep and repair duties

• basic understanding of decal application

• technical manuals and OPP maintenance policies to perform work that adheres to appropriate established maintenance schedules and repair authorization procedures

• variety of hand tools to perform maintenance tasks

• the Occupational Health & Safety Act to follow safe work practices

• and ability to coordinate the receipt of all used police equipment and accessories stripped from trade in vehicles

INTERPERSONAL AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

Job requires:

• oral communication skills to alert and provide information to skilled tradespersons of maintenance problems and to
gather/discuss information from other maintenance staff regarding technical problems

PROBLEM SOLVING/COMPLEXITY:
Job requires:

• ability to diagnose and test electrical equipment to determine the extent of repair/refurbishing

• ability to perform repair to vehicle wiring systems and refurbishing police electrical equipment and would alert supervisor of involved problems for assessment

• ability to apply correct methods of repair and selecting tools to be used

• ability to apply care when applying decals and selecting correct methods to be used

• ability to be precautious when modifying/repairing vehicles electrical system.

Judgement :

Work is performed in accordance with established maintenance techniques and detailed procedures for performing routine maintenance work. Refers matters not covered by procedures to supervisor for consultation (e.g. need for extensive repair and new techniques). Work is reviewed for quality and satisfactory completion.

Judgement and discretion are applied when:

• performing upkeep and repair duties under the guidance of the foreman

• identifying unusual matters not covered by procedures to bring to supervisor's attention

RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHER EMPLOYEES:

• No formal responsibility for the work of others.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY DEMANDS

Physical Demands:

• physical dexterity when using both shop equipment and power tools e.g. power drills, soldering stations, air guns to
perform repairs and refurbishing duties

• daily sitting and / or standing for periods of time and bending, crouching, and reaching sometimes above shoulder level to perform repairs and refurbishing duties

• daily lifting of material and equipment weighing 10-50 lbs. Job requires occasional lifting of materials and equipment
weighing up to 100 lbs

Sensory Demands:

• Visual – Job requires attention to detail and concentration

• Audio – Job requires employee to be exposed to loud noise of the operation of equipment within the garage

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Works in a large, well lit, and clean garage. Works with potential electrical and physical hazards. Precautions are required when modifying vehicles electrical system. Risk to be exposed to noise and fluctuation in temperature.
