What can I expect to do in this role?

Provincial Georeferencing within the base data infrastructure unit within the Geographic Information Ontario section requires this position to support the acquisition, analysis, integration, quality control, maintenance and dissemination of geographic names data. You will assure the accuracy and validity of digital extent information for complex geographic features found within the Geographic Names Extent Layer (GEL) in Natural Resource Values and Information System (NRVIS) or coming from other layers, such as the hydrographic layer in NRVIS, by applying toponymic standards related to the delineation of the features. You will research extent information from both digital sources and historical hard-copy map products to resolve the issues associated with determining the digital toponymic extent of features. You will perform technical data handling and assurance functions supporting the Provincial Georeferencings geographic names data base activities and products/services to clients and partners. You will assist in developing data management procedures, practices, standards and technical specifications related to the geographic names, the Geographic Names Extent Layer (GEL) in NRVIS.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

technical skills and knowledge of computer systems including Windows operating environment, ARCGIS and modules, and structured programming such as visual basic for creating geo-processing subroutines for basic GIS computer programs; knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications and spatial data technologies, spatial and tabular concepts, and topological and raster based constructs; knowledge of land and natural resource information management and geographical referencing standards; knowledge of topographic base data (hydrographic data, geographic names, and other base data); combined knowledge of MNRs corporate information holdings and data bases encompassing topography, and natural resources; knowledge of organizational and time management skills; ability to resolve data/data base issues involving monitoring and analyzing/validating data, isolating and resolving errors and discrepancies; good oral and written communication skills. Note: No temporary living expenses are available.
