What can I expect to do in this role?

Join the Ministry's Transportation Enforcement Team and share a history of service and success that ensures the roads of Ontario are safe and secure through education, legislation and regulation. As a transportation enforcement officer assigned to a specific geographic area, you will work with drivers and the public to promote safe operation of vehicles on the province's highway by performing detailed inspections/examinations of vehicles and documents. You will compile reports and gather evidence/information for prosecutions and Crown witnesses when necessary and provide information and advice to stakeholders. You will apply specific enforcement policies and procedures during the inspections of vehicles to verify compliance with legislative requirements, and enforce the application of those requirements by determining the appropriate action in cases where the vehicles are not in compliance. You will interact with members of the diverse and multicultural public of Ontario and educate drivers and the public in general on the legislative requirements and policies related to transportation safety.

These positions are located in: Vineland, Lancaster (bilingual), Aurora, Lakeshore (Essex-near Windsor, bilingual), Mississauga, Trafalgar TIS North, Trafalgar TIS South, Whitby, Putnam (near London).

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

general knowledge of traffic safety legislation and industry standards, judicial rules and procedures, or the successful completion of a law and security/police foundation course; physical ability to conduct all aspects of inspections of vehicles in all weather conditions and to successfully complete the Defensive Tactics training and the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CSVA) training programs; demonstrated ability to recognize and be sensitive to cultural differences and to the diverse composition of the public of Ontario; excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills to interact with and develop a positive relationship with members of the public with various, diverse cultural and ethnical backgrounds; analytical, investigative and problem-solving skills; initiative to independently organize and perform work in the field and make decisions in accordance with legislative and policy requirements; excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to organize information in a clear, coherent and comprehensive manner; ability to apply basic arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions to solve problems; ability to apply basic computer skills to access and communicate with standard desktop software; ability to work rotating 24/7 shifts, including weekends and statutory holidays, with some provincial travel; valid driver's licence and acceptable driving record. Four of these positions are bilingual and require proficiency in English and French.
