FORENSIC TECHNOLOGIST, PHYSICAL SCIENCES

**This position will be relocated to the new state of the art facility at the Provincial Downsview Complex located at 1201 Wilson Ave in 2013.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role you will:
•conduct forensic testing and examinations of a variety of case-related items and samples
•generate and collect test results, analyze preliminary finding and apply quality assurance processes
•set up, operate, maintain and validate assigned instrumentation to ensure effective operations and production of accurate and reliable results
•maintain the laboratory's inventory of supplies and equipment
•provide testimony in court when required regarding laboratory procedures, methods and protocols

How do I qualify?

Technical Knowledge

You have:
•completed post-secondary education from a university (degree) or community college (diploma or certificate) in one of the physical, life, or forensic sciences, or equivalent
•knowledge in laboratory practices, techniques and scientific theories related to document examination, digital imaging firearms and toolmarks and their application to forensic science to conduct the testing of a variety of forensic case exhibits and samples (e.g. questioned documents, firearms)
•knowledge in evidence handling procedures to ensure the preservation evidence in order to meet evidence requirements (e.g. continuity, chain of custody) of the courts of law of Ontario and accreditation protocols
•ability to acquire and apply CFS standard operating procedures practice and practices to ensure compliance in all activities
•ability to obtain and apply CFS quality assurance program to run assurance processes to confirm, validate and ensure reliability of test results
•general knowledge of legislative authorities (e.g. WHIMIS, Occupational Health and Safety) to ensure compliance
•knowledge of the court system and related protocols to ensure compliance when testing in court
•knowledge of accreditation standards (e.g. America Society of Crime Lab Directors, Laboratory Accreditation Board) to ensure all standards are met

Analytical and Problem Solving skills

You have:
•reasoning skills to consider available procedures and determine optimal methods of testing materials
•you can analyze preliminary results of laboratory tests and conduct quality assurance processes
•you can confirm finding, ensure reliability and validity of results and ensure results have met standards and procedures
•you have ability to troubleshoot and rectify instrumental problems
•you have ability to identify precautions when handling potential biohazard firearms, or other materials that pose a health and safety risk by applying quality control and laboratory procedures

Communication (oral and written) skills

You have:
•demonstrated written skills to prepare data summary findings and detailed notes of observations and tests and to draft analytical procedures and assist in the publication of research
•oral skills to discuss detailed test findings with scientific staff and managers to assist with interpretation of test results for case reports and court testimony

Other Essential skills

•you possess time management skills to ensure efficient workflow of assigned tasks
•you possess manual dexterity to manipulate sensitive instruments and samples with precision
•you can work in a team environment and work one on one with all level of staff and managers
