We are looking for high energy self-starters, with an ability to think &work independently, who will make a meaningful contribution to the work &mandate of the WSIB. You will have the opportunity to serve the public in this role, which involves travel throughout the province of Ontario. These permanent opportunities will interest those who have demonstrated sound judgement with excellent oral &written communications skills, who can build effective relationships &relate to people both inside &outside the organization.

What can I expect to do in this role?

• Plan & coordinate components of an investigation independently or with other Senior Investigators. Develop an action plan for commencing an investigation which can encompass four categories; Employers, Workers, Service Providers & Suppliers,& Internal Investigations.
• Conduct confidential investigations in an efficient & timely manner. Review information/evidence to determine the scope & order in which to commence an investigative action plan. Propose & substantiate reasons for surveillance activity when required.
• Conduct interviews & obtain statements from witnesses & cautioned statements from accused individuals.
• Prepare and execute Search Warrant(s). Maintain continuity of exhibits. Prepare exhibit reports, detention orders and returns to the Justice of the Peace.
• Analyze evidence and other information to determine the best course of action such as the laying of charge(s). Prepare and present reports containing investigative results to assist in decision making.
• Prepare and deliver First Appearance Packages and Full Disclosure court briefs. Prepare draft resolution documents to assist Senior Prosecutor as required. Prepare and serve summonses, and other legal documents.
• Assist in coordinating court proceedings.
• Developing and maintaining strong co-operative relationships with law enforcement agencies and government institutions.

How do I qualify?

Knowledge and Skills

• University completion at an undergraduate level or equivalent law enforcement educational background is required.
• Knowledge and/or experience in Fraud Related Investigations or a Legal background sufficient to demonstrate the use of expert principles and theories at an innovative level where formulation of original concepts or approaches to work is required.
• Strong judgement skills to analyze and evaluate the situation at hand
• Knowledge of: law and court procedures as it relates to fraud and regulatory offences and the provisions of the Provincial Offences Act and the Criminal Code of Canada.
• Investigative and interviewing techniques; and the execution of Search Warrants and the protection of evidence.
• The ability to multi-task and be responsible for managing complex and confidential investigations, which may involve a project team approach.
• Knowledge of computer systems and associated software such as MS Office (Word & Excel), Outlook and databases.
• Knowledge of basic accounting practices and principles to analyze financial documents.
• Knowledge of the Charter of Rights, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Canada Evidence Act, Ontario Evidence Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, the Criminal Code of Canada, the Provincial Offences Act and other relevant legislation.
• Influential skills requiring sensitivity, diplomacy and tact. Writing skills to prepare comprehensive documents including investigative reports, Information(s) to obtain a Search Warrant and court briefs. Oral skills to present complex and/or sensitive information to individuals or groups. .
• Ability and willingness to travel throughout the Province of Ontario or elsewhere, providing their own vehicle, as a condition of employment.

As a precondition of employment, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board will require prospective candidates to undergo a criminal record check prior to or at anytime following hire.
