The Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT) is a highly specialized adjudicative Tribunal that hears appeals of final decisions of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. The Tribunal seeks a highly motivated individual for the role of Reference Librarian to provide timely, accurate and reliable library services for the Ontario Workplace Tribunal Library (OWTL). The OWTL provides library services to the tribunals' WSIAT, the Ontario Labour Relations Board, the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, and the Pay Equity Hearings Tribunal. The library is administered by WSIAT and is open to the public.

What can I expect to do in this role?

As Reference Librarian, you will:
• provide reference and research services to adjudicators, staff and clients of the four tribunals, as well as to the public and other ministries such as the Ministry of Labour
• advance, promote and increase access to information resources by ensuring availability through appropriate options
• develop tools and processes to optimize organization, retention and retrieval of knowledge and information in any media or format
• prepare and deliver training sessions to staff and adjudicators on topics such as current awareness, databases, and other electronic products relevant to research and information needs
• prepare and deliver orientations to new staff and adjudicators on library services
• create and update content for the OWTL website and Tribunal intranets
• update various reference documents, such as relevant statues, amendments, etc.
• select content for current awareness packages for the four tribunals, both paper-based or electronic
• maintain special library databases, including collecting metrics as required and recording selected reference questions and answers in a database
• participate in collection management activities as required, by providing expert insight on collection development and assisting in collection evaluation/weeding
• Catalogue new material using Library of Congress classification and Inmagic CS/TextWorks

How do I qualify?

Research and Library Science Skills:

• you have expert knowledge of research techniques, particularly in the areas of law and medicine
• you have thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of library science, including collection organization, cataloguing/classification, collection development and management
• you have expert knowledge of data sources including Quicklaw, CanLII, internet searching, CHRR, in-house databases, and other electronic tools as required

Knowledge:

• you have knowledge of relevant laws/regulations/rules pertaining to the mandates of client tribunals
• you have knowledge of the principles of administrative law and the operation of regulatory agencies
• you have first-hand knowledge of user needs and expert research knowledge, to create training programs and develop user help such as pathfinders, research guides, etc.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

• you have strong oral/written communication skills and interpersonal skills, to assist library clients with information searches, provide guidance, and conduct training sessions and presentations
• you have strong written communication skills to prepare administrative reports
