What can I expect to do in this role?

Are you a highly motivated, analytical person focusing on Capital Markets and interested in accounting, settlements or risk management? If yes, please consider the Ontario Financing Authority (OFA), the Province's treasury and debt management agency, for your next summer job. The OFA, on behalf of the Province of Ontario, uses sophisticated financial instruments to manage the cost and risks arising from debt issuance and management in domestic and foreign capital markets. Summer positions are available in the areas of Accounting, Risk Control and Settlement. These positions will provide students with opportunities to familiarize themselves with debt and related hedging instruments, such as bonds, swaps, futures, and options used by financial institutions and institutional investors; their accounting and settlement, risk monitoring and reporting.

Work Description:

These positions will support different teams on a range of financial initiatives and business activities including:

Accounting
• Assist in the financial reporting process of the Public Accounts and year-end audit
• Assist in the routine tasks of accounting and processing e.g. reconciliation and other reporting functions
• Assist in conducting research on industry best practices pertaining to financial reporting and financial instruments

Risk Control
• Follow established procedures to support the timely generation and analysis of market and credit risk, as well as public debt interest reports
• Use industry-leading applications, such as Bloomberg, to monitor developments in government bond and credit markets
• Provide statistical and other analytical support

Settlements
• Assist in confirming and settling capital markets transactions, preparing wire payments for interest on debt swap, foreign exchange, money market and bond transactions, as well as loan payments
• Assist in maintaining financial transactions in the Ontario Financing Authority's treasury and preparing accounting entries in OFA's systems
• Assist in monitoring each financial transaction throughout the settlement process by ensuring completion, receipt, and payment in order to avoid interest charges, penalties and/or harm to the Province's reputation

Communication and Interpersonal skills
• You apply your written communication skills to prepare a variety of documents (e.g. reports, document findings, record data, presentations, meeting minutes, etc.)
• You apply your oral communications skills to communicate and share your knowledge with staff and/or clients and to present your findings
• You apply your initiative and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team

Technical Skills and Knowledge
• You apply your experience using Microsoft Office product suite, such as word processing (Word), spreadsheets (Excel), databases; email and Internet to conduct research and prepare a variety of documents
• You apply your knowledge of the accounting principles of financial instruments to financial reporting
• You apply your knowledge of financial instruments, such as, bonds, derivatives, e.g. swaps, options and money market instruments
• You apply your knowledge of Canadian Depository for Securities (CDS), Depository Trust Company (DTC) and the International Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA) terminology

Analytical and Organizational skills
• You apply your planning and organizational skills to collect, organize, review and verify information/data through review of files, reports, and other means
• You can conduct research and perform analysis (i.e. quantitative, qualitative, statistical)and synthesize and summarize information
• You can input data accurately paying close attention to details
• You work independently or as part of a team; you plan, organize and prioritize your time to meet competing deadlines
