What can I expect to do in this role?

Work Description:

• Assist fish culture station staff by performing technical duties related to the culture of fish and the operation and maintenance of the station such as tank cleaning, disinfection and equipment maintenance (e.g. piping, valves, etc.)
• Provide customer service assistance by providing tours of the facility to the visitors and responding to questions on the fish culture program
• Assist staff by performing daily fish culture activities including feeding, inventories, picking of losses, fish marking, anaesthetizing, thinning, disease sampling, record keeping etc.
• Assist with checking oxygen levels, temperatures, flow rates, and adjusts as required
• Assist fish culture station staff in observing fish behaviour, mortality trends, densities etc. and advises fish culture technician and operation coordinators
• Assists with computer work by creating spread sheets, data entry, word processing etc.
• Participating in team environment to assist in implementing fish culture station operational goals and objectives
• Assist with fish health monitoring, using microscope for identification of disease and following biosecurity protocol at the operation of fish culture station
• Assist with buildings, grounds, equipment maintenance and advising technicians of minor repairs, operating and maintaining fish culture equipment

How do I qualify?

Some positions may require the successful candidate(s) to undergo a personal security screening check as a condition of employment.

Qualification Requirements:

Technical Skills and Knowledge
• You have an interest in understanding fish culture techniques; hatchery methods and procedures
• You have an interest in the fish culture program, in the overall fisheries management program, species at risk, and biodiversity
• You have an interest in resource management principles
• You can apply your knowledge of computer such as Microsoft Office product suite, such as word processing (Word), spreadsheets (Excel), databases; email and Internet to conduct research and prepare a variety of documents
• You have the ability to work in a strenuous environment and inclement weather

Analytical and Organizational Skills
• You have the ability to conduct research and data compilation including assembling information from hardcopy and digital sources, performing data entry and analysis
• You have good analytical, problem solving, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills

Communications and Interpersonal Skills
• You apply your written communication skills to prepare and maintain a variety of documents (e.g. document findings, record data, maintenance schedules, etc.)
• You apply your oral communication and customer service skills to respond to fish culture staff, public and/or internal clients
• You apply your interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team and participate in meetings
• You work independently or as part of a team; you plan, organize and prioritize your time to meet competing deadlines

Other Requirements
• Ability to work in an outdoor environment with some physical activity involved, including lifting and carrying weighted items in accordance with the Employment Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety regulations
• You are willing to accompany fish culture staff on fish stocking assignments throughout the region
