What can I expect to do in this role?

You will:

• enforce the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations in workplaces
• conduct inspections, investigations and quality assurance assessments
• provide professional advice to staff and management
• gather evidence and prepare engineering reports
• act as an expert witness in court and as an occupational health and safety expert/advisor in the field
• issue orders, and promote safe working practices and conditions with workplace parties via the Internal Responsibility System (IRS)

How do I qualify?

Mandatory requirements:

• you have a membership with the Professional Engineers of Ontario or eligible for membership within three months
• you have a degree in civil engineering with structural specialization
• you have a valid class “G” driver's licence or equivalent as recognized by the Province of Ontario and ability to travel within service area
• you have the ability to work after hours/on call

Technical expertise:

• you have experience evaluating the structural integrity of systems/components subjected to static and dynamic loads, construction methods and machinery
• you have expert knowledge and extensive experience in structural engineering including discipline-related theories, principles and practices including those related to occupational health and safety
• you have he ability to keep up to date on trends and developments in engineering and the health and safety field
• you have the ability to identify hazards and contraventions of legislation, apply concepts of risk reduction using protective measures/devices and provide authoritative, reliable and defensible assessments/advice and recommendations

Communication skills:

• you have excellent communications, consulting, advisory and relationship management skills
• you have solid conflict resolution and stress management skills

Other general skills:

• you have the ability to plan and manage an often unpredictable workload
• you have the ability to plan and undertake high level, complex engineering inspections and investigations
• you have the ability to interpret and enforce legislation and expert knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations in workplaces
• you are proficient in using a computer and relative software to produce analysis, reports and a variety of materials.
