The Sagonaska Demonstration School's, mission is to provide a safe place where students, families and staff find support to learn, grow, discover and ultimately, 'Believe in Themselves.' At Sagonaska we provide a specialized residential school program for students with severe learning disabilities whose educational needs cannot be adequately met in their local boards. The school is known for being forward thinking and technologically advanced. Upon entering the doors of Sagonaska, you will feel the excitement and commitment to learning excellence.

Do you want to make a difference in the lives of students with severe learning disabilities? Do you have a background in child development and experience in a child care related field? If your background also includes leadership and coordination skills, this unique all-encompassing opportunity may be of interest to you.

What can I expect to do in this role?

• provide group leadership and technical expertise to student support counsellors and school staff;
• plan and monitor routines of students in a residential school setting;
• coordinate timetables for residence staff;
• plan, organize and implement appropriate programs for students;
• perform duties of a Team Lead.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• Community college certificate and/or equivalent training, education and experience in a child care related field;
• Current certification in CPR, Standard First Aid;
• Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI) and/or Behaviour Management Training or equivalent

Skills and Qualifications

Your background and experience enables you to meet the following requirements:
• Knowledge and experience in child development and child care to assist children with special needs and to facilitate programs for learning disabled students;
• Knowledge of relevant legislation/policies/procedures/guidelines/practices such as the Child Welfare Act, Health and Safety standards, and the OPSEU Collective Agreement.
• Team Skills, to lead, coach and problem solve and to deal with crisis situations;
• Excellent communication/interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff and other professionals.
• Sound judgement and problem solving skills
• Ability to work effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
• Willingness and ability to work shifts

Note: The successful candidate will be required to provide an original, satisfactory Criminal Reference Check, including Vulnerable Sector Screening (dated within the last six months) as deemed suitable by the Employer, prior to the commencement of employment.
