What can I expect to do in this role?
Work Description:
You may be required to work on some or all of the following tasks:
• Fish and aquatic ecosystem assessment and research, including creel surveys, index netting, biological sampling, data entry and basic analyses. Projects may be related to community analyses and structure of aquatic ecosystems, habitat assessment, growth and diet analyses, for wetlands, stream, and lake systems.
• Wildlife population and wildlife habitat assessment including both aerial and ground surveys; species identification and mapping; as well as sampling and assessment for a variety of wildlife including game and non-game species, waterfowl and species at risk
• The operation of boats, outdoor motors, ATVs and other specialized equipment may be required. The assistant may work outdoors and in diverse weather conditions
• Work may require experience specified/listed in the questions below or other similar tasks as assigned
How do I qualify?
Mandatory
All positions require students to be 15 years of age on the first day of employment with no age limit.
Some positions require students to be 15-24 years of age (or 15-29 years of age if you are a person with a disability) on the first day of employment due to program funding.
Some positions on this job ad will require the successful candidate to undergo a general-level screening check, which includes a criminal record check, at their own expense.
Qualification Requirements:
Communications and Interpersonal Skills
• You apply your written communication skills to prepare a variety of documents (e.g. reports, document findings, record data).
• You apply your interpersonal skills to work in a team environment and have a strong work ethic with the ability to work independently
Technical Skills and Knowledge
• You apply your experience using Microsoft Office product suite, such as word processing (Word), spreadsheets (Excel), databases (Access), presentations (PowerPoint); email and internet to conduct research and prepare a variety of documents
Analytical and Organizational Skills
• You apply your planning and organizational skills to collect, organize, review and verify information/data through review of files, reports, and other means
• You work independently or as part of a team; you plan, organize and prioritize your time to meet competing work deadlines
Other Requirements
• You can work in an outdoor environment with some physical activity involved, including lifting and carrying weighted items in accordance with the Employment Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety regulations
• You are willing to accompany staff on multi-day outdoor field trips
• Some positions may require you to have a valid Ontario G2 Driver's Licence (or higher) with an excellent record
• Some positions may require you to have or acquire a Pleasure Craft Operators Card, Standard First Aid and CPR certification as a condition of your employment
