Interested in an exciting career in fisheries assessment and management? If so, consider this opportunity to provide leadership to the fisheries programs on the Great Lakes.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

• provide team leadership to staff on all operational aspects of the fisheries assessment and related research programs
• assist in the development of annual and long-term operational plans, produce schedules, spreadsheets and flowcharts
• ensure the maintenance and security of capital assets at local field stations
• provide training and safety instructions to operators, scientists, and technicians

How do I qualify?

Mandatory requirements:

• You possess a valid Ontario class 'G' Driver's Licence.
• You have the ability to acquire a Marine Emergency Duties (MED 1,2) certificate from the Coast Guard as well as the ability to obtain the Small Vessel Operators Proficiency qualification.
• You have the ability to operate small vessels under a variety of weather conditions, including inclement weather.

General skills:

• You have team leadership skills to provide guidance to technical staff.
• You have financial management skills to assist with revenue and expenditure projections.
• You have communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with other government staff and the public verbally and in writing (using Word, email)
• You have analytical and evaluation skills to resolve issues and review operational policies, manuals and protocols
• You have the ability to interpret, apply and ensure compliance with applicable legislation and regulations.
• You have the ability to use computers and associated software including Microsoft Word, Excel, power point etc. to produce documents, flow charts, schedules and presentations.

Knowledge of fisheries management:

• You have experience carrying out fish habitat and population assessments.
• You have experience applying research and data collection techniques related to fisheries management.

Knowledge of fisheries vessels and equipment:

• You have knowledge of great lakes vessel design, capital planning, construction and maintenance.
• You have knowledge of the design, operation, and construction of fishing gear such as gill nets, hoop nets, trawls and seines.
• You have knowledge of the design and maintenance of fisheries and ecosystem assessment equipment.
