What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

• lead a team of professional, technical and administrative staff in the planning and implementation of a multi-year, multi-million dollar project involving rehabilitation plans for the surface contaminants, contaminated water management and land management issues at the former Steep Rock Iron Mine property, located near the Town of Atikokan in Northwestern Ontario
• lead and manage all aspects of the project, including staffing, strategic and tactical planning, public, First Nation, stakeholder and public agency engagement, fiscal planning and forecasting and managing multiple large construction and consulting contracts

How do I qualify?

Technical expertise:

• knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of land, water and ecosystem planning and management, including interpretation and application of acts, regulations, policies and guidelines which affect lands, waters and resource management
• ability to lead, plan and oversee the monitoring and remediation operations, planning and implementation of rehabilitation plans that may involve diverse and complex issues involving contaminated soils, toxic waters, physical hazards, land management, etc.
• knowledge of budget planning and administration, contract procurement, and contract administration to plan and manage multi-million dollar annual allocations and ensure that contracts deliver quality results and value

Leadership and management skills:

• management and leadership skills to direct the work of a multi-disciplinary team of professionals and provide project direction to external specialized resources where there is no direct reporting relationships
• knowledge of policies and guidelines related to human resources management, best practices and legislative provisions for working conditions to effectively manage teams, including assessing performance and dealing with performance issues and grievances

Communication and interpersonal skills:

• relationship management, consultation skills and political acuity to lead the development and implementation of stakeholder and communications strategies and consultations and to build strong working relationships and remain transparent with partners and stakeholders such as site contractors, local municipalities and First Nations
• communication and presentation skills to prepare and present a range of materials including planning documents, briefing notes, and presentations and to represent the ministry in public settings
• negotiation, persuasion and influencing skills to seek common ground when objectives are conflicting, to gain consensus and to create optimal solutions during difficult negotiations

Project management skills:

• knowledge of and experience using project management principles and techniques to steer the project through its lifespan
• demonstrated time management skills to meet deadlines, to lead project planning and implementation, and to provide timely analysis and response to a wide range of issues

Analytical skills and risk management:

• knowledge of analytical, risk assessment and management principles, techniques and methodologies to evaluate and synthesize contaminant data and information and direct the timely analysis and development of strategies, remediation options and management of critical and high profile issues

Computer proficiency:

• knowledge and understanding of the operating principles and management of information resources, including computers, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), database management and office software applications (e.g. word processing, spreadsheet, presentation) to conduct analysis and prepare a variety of materials
