Join the Ontario Police College's Food Services team and consider this great opportunity where you will showcase your culinary skills and prepare a variety of foods for meals served to current and future law enforcement professionals and public safety personnel at the Ontario Police College, under the direction of the Head Shift Cook.

About the job

As the Shift Cook at the Ontario Police College, you'll be part of a dedicated team responsible for feeding and supporting the daily routines of staff and students. Working alongside kitchen staff you'll be working in a fast-paced, high-volume kitchen environment where no two days are the same.

In this role, you will:
•Prepare and cook meals following approved recipes and menus
•Adjust menus or items based on changes in servings or food availability
•Test new recipes and keep records
•Serve food in approved portions when needed
•Keep kitchen, equipment, and work areas clean and safe; report repairs
•Guide and supervise other kitchen staff, as required.
•Help receive, check, and store supplies

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

•Certification as Journeyman Cook/Chef or equivalent related experience.
•Must be able to pass an OPP background security investigation.

Knowledge and Experience

You have knowledge and skills in:
•cooking and baking methods, procedures and standards applicable to an institutional kitchens
•volume cooking and baking, to prepare, cook and bake various foods for meals
•instructional methods and techniques to instruct and/or oversee the work of kitchen staff
•the use of kitchen knives and other items to prepare food
•knowledge of applicable health and safety components of legislation (e.g., WHMIS) to ensure the safe operation of equipment and kitchen cleaning products comprised of chemicals

Other Essential Skills

You can:
•ascertain the suitability of food for inclusion in meal plans when tasting recipes.
•ascertain appropriate menu or menu items within a range of options when substitution of regular menu is required
•identify the need for equipment repairs, and informs supervisor.
•observe the condition of food/bakery operations, related equipment and work area, and identifies the need for cleaning

Communication Skills

You are able to:
• to take food orders when serving staff and students
• provide instruction to kitchen staff
