The Ministry of the Attorney General, Civil Law Division, seeks experienced counsel with civil litigation experience to join the legal team at the Crown Law Office – Civil (“CLOC”).
This is an opportunity to work in an exciting and supportive legal office on high-profile and cutting-edge litigation. The position offers the chance to engage directly with complex files that shape government policy, focus on Crown-Indigenous relations and impact the public interest.

CLOC represents the province in civil and public law litigation including judicial reviews, appeals, class actions, tort claims, s.35 claims and other issues of significant public importance.
Counsel will gain exposure to diverse areas of civil law while working alongside experienced colleagues in an environment that values mentorship, professional growth, and excellence in advocacy.

About the job

Duties will include:

•Managing a broad civil litigation practice.
•Representing the Crown, the Ministry of the Attorney General, other Ministries, agencies, boards and tribunals in various legal proceedings, including actions, applications, appeals and applications for judicial review in various levels of court and administrative bodies.
•Briefing senior decision makers at the Ministry of the Attorney General and across government, including senior management through in-person briefings and/or the preparation of briefing materials.
•Representing the Crown in Right of Ontario in Indigenous-related legal proceedings, including actions, applications, judicial reviews, appeals, and interventions.
•Travel throughout Ontario may be required.

Mandatory requirements

• Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario

Knowledge and Skills

•You have demonstrated significant experience leading complex civil litigation matters, including in-court advocacy (e.g. motions, applications and appeals), and trial or trial preparation experience.
•You have demonstrated legal and professional judgment, analytical and interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
•You are comfortable and effective in briefing senior officials and decision makers.
•You are able to work under pressure, within tight timeframes in a high-volume environment, and can effectively and collaboratively work and or lead a team.
•Knowledge of public law and knowledge of Aboriginal law and Indigenous issues, including issues relating to s. 35 Aboriginal and treaty rights..
