About the job

In this role, you will:

• perform a variety of semi-skilled duties for the construction, repair and maintenance of marine facilities
• perform semi-skilled mechanical duties by assisting with emergency and routine repairs and maintenance
• operate specialized power equipment and tools
• carry out the duties of shipboard positions as required due to staff shortage or other unforeseen circumstances
• prepare various documents and reports for the Marine Repair Foreman/woman
• assist in the operation of the ship's on-board diesel engines, generators, propulsion units, electrical system, hydraulic system, pumps and drive shafts

Mandatory requirements

• This position requires the successful candidate to have the ability to obtain a valid Ontario class D Driver's Licence with Z endorsement.

Technical knowledge and skills:

• knowledge of procedures and standards related to various trades such as carpentry, masonry, equipment repair and welding to perform semi-skilled tasks required in the construction, repair and maintenance of ferry equipment, bubble systems and terminal facilities
• knowledge and ability to read and understand mechanical systems, plans and diagrams and technical drawings
• skill in the use of hand/power tools as well as the operation of specialized equipment such as HIAB cranes, hammers, drills, welding torches, forklifts and compressors to perform equipment operation and repair and construction functions in accordance with established safe work practices

Communication and interpersonal skills:

• you can effectively discuss work plans and details with contractors
• you can respond to inquiries from the public regarding repair and maintenance of ferry terminals and docks
• you can assess information and complete reports related to equipment cost and project inspection activities

Analytical skills:

• evaluative skills to review work plans and diagrams and determine appropriate work method and sequences in carrying out repair and maintenance activities
• ability to determine appropriate and correct usage of tools/materials to achieve desired results
• analytical skills to assess information and complete reports related to equipment costs and project inspection activities
