Bring your skills and experience to this position where you will ensure the health and safety of the Provincial Parks for the visiting public and staff. You will monitor and assess safe food handling, drinking water and sewage systems, recreational water, staff housing, and other areas of public health as required.

About the job

In this role, you will:

• carry-out public health audits and assist in healthy and safe workplace monitoring in Provincial Parks
• assist with the water and wastewater quality monitoring program, the food safety program, and the general sanitation of parks programs to ensure compliance
• advise or train staff on appropriate safety methods

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

• You must have the ability to travel extensively throughout the provincial geographic area of Ontario Parks on a bi-weekly basis between May and September.
• The position requires the successful candidate to have a valid class G driver's licence or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have valid driver's licence upon being hired.

Public Health Knowledge

• knowledge of current public health science and practices normally acquired through a university program of public health/environmental health, by obtaining designation as a Certified Public Health Inspector or having the equivalent knowledge
• knowledge and understanding of provincial legislation and regulations concerning the protection of public health; i.e. Health Protection and Promotion Act, Small Drinking Water Systems Regulation, Food Premises Regulations, Part 8 – Sewage Systems, Vector-borne Disease and other health hazards

Assessment and Inspection Knowledge

• knowledge of practical public health assessment and inspection procedures in order to properly carry out inspections and audits of premises and facilities related to public health compliance
• ability to determine whether a public health hazard exists and what action must be done to remove it, or what controls must be put in place to nullify the hazard

Analytical Skills

• analytical skills to assess each item on the audit inspection lists as to whether or not standards, guidelines, Acts, regulations and park directives are in compliance, and what recommendations are needed to bring them into compliance

Interpersonal and Communication Skills

• proven interpersonal and communication skills to clearly communicate audit concerns and recommendations to park staff and management

Project and Time-Management Skills

• knowledge of project and time management techniques in order to plan and deliver audit services on a timely and cost-effective basis and meet deadlines by setting out task lists and timelines

Computer and Equipment Proficiency

• ability to use computers and appropriate software to write reports, develop charts and graphs, to provide spreadsheets of data, for research and to communicate effectively electronically
• ability to use and calibrate various testing meters to measure levels of monitoring parameters for water, wastewater, food, air, etc.
